Atlanta folks,

My good friend Cooper Sanchez is having an art show this Thursday and Friday in Decatur, showing his new paintings and drawings. The show is in the funky stone building attached to the Marlay pub, which is on Ponce right when you come into Decatur from the west side. There will be plenty of beer and wine flowing, and I'm told that Ryan Gainey will attend in full regalia. If you can, come and check out this show.

I started work on this documentary in 1997, did a bunch of interviews, collected some totally weird archival footage, but I lost steam and handed the project off to someone else. This person also subsequently lost steam a couple years later and handed the project off to the editor Michael Koepenick, who was able to see the project to completion. I am so excited this film is finally seeing the light of day. If you are in Atlanta, go see the premiere at the ATL Film Fest on March 30!

Who knew that canceling cable would make me a local tv news star?

Lee Clontz, Shannon O'Daniel and I have helped produce this online Coursera course "Introduction to Digital Sound Design," taught by the Emory Music professor Steve Everett.  It's a four week course that starts this coming Monday.  It's free, involves very little work aside from watching about two hours of video per week, and nearly 35,000 people from around the world have signed up for it.  If you have any interest in how to record and process sound in a computer environment or want to know more about contemporary sound composition practices, check this course out.  Professor Everett covers the basic principles of sound and then does a deep dive into audio synthesis and how to use the free audio programs Audacity and Soundation.  This course represents Emory's first big leap into online education, and it's been a real pleasure to work on it.

Emory's own Natasha Trethewey was just named the U.S. Poet Laureate.  I am very proud to have worked with Natasha on a number of videos for the online journal Southern Spaces over the past eight years.  Links to these videos can be found in the article below.  Congrats Natasha!

Chuck's record "Back to the Woods" comes out today on CD. As I mentioned before, it's a tribute to the pioneers of blues piano. On the record, Chuck covers this unusual piano tune by Skip James, who is generally known for his blues guitar work.

Chuck and I worked on this project together for over two years. It's been a true labor of love. It's a tribute to the early blues piano players like Leroy Carr and Little Brother Montgomery, who are often overlooked compared to the famous blues guitarists like Robert Johnson. The record features Keith Richards and John Mayer on two tracks, Candi Staton on two tracks, Danny Barnes on nearly half the record, and a bunch of other guests. The CD comes out on March 27th, but it's already available now digitally via iTunes. Have a listen (30 second previews on this website link but 90 second previews within the iTunes application). If you think it's decent, tell a friend. For a niche record like this, word of mouth is really valuable.

Huge thanks to Chuck for letting me coax him into doing this and for bringing such vitality and imagination to these blues songs. I'm already pushing for a follow-up record of old country piano tunes!
