Singapore MVNO offers public transit riders free data

Mobile virtual network operator Circles.Life will offer 100MB data for every 10 rides taken using stored value card, EZ-Link, and an additional 1GB for customers who link their numbers through the app.

The new service was the result of a partnership with EZ-Link, which issued contactless payment cards used widely by commuters and as a payment option at more than 30,000 locations, including convenience stores, fast food outlets, and taxis.

Slated to commence end-May 2018, the new offering was part of #MVNO Circles.Life's efforts to offer "integrated" services through tie-ups with market players across different verticals. Its co-founder Abhishek Gupta said: "As the only fully digital telco in Singapore, we aim to digitise the nation one vertical at a time."

Thailand’s MVNOs try to see a way forward

The business of mobile virtual network operators #MVNO has been frozen due to lack in regulations. The regulator NBTC has to deep a relationship with the mobile operators, an obstacle to ensure benefit for all players,

MVNOs have no choice but to rent network capacity from state telecom enterprises TOT and CAT Telecom, because TOT and CAT have enough network capacity to exchange for revenue. Running the business under the partnership with the state enterprises is impractical amid fierce market competition.

"The major operators look at MVNOs as a threat, so it's not easy for MVNOs to get attractive deals through TOT's and CAT's network capacity," an industry veteran said.

Rungsun Channarukul, senior executive vice-president of TOT, said "I personally hope that MVNOs will be able to hold 5% of the overall number of subscriptions in the market,"That may be a proper portion for a better competitive structure in a market like Singapore, where MVNOs operate service efficiently."

Suroj Lamsam, president of Loxley Plc, (which owns the i-Kool MVNO), said the telecom regulator governs with overly strict rules that add to the MVNOs' existing burden.

The mobile market in Thailand must have MVNO's as alternatives. I think 5% out of a total of 105 million subscriptions should be provided by MVNOs

Singapore: Another proof that MVNO brings innovation and competition to the market

Shortly after the mobile virtual network operator #MVNO Circles.Life. launched its data-heavy, no-contract mobile plans in August highlighting the first-world problem of “data deprivation”, StarHub announced it would be offering of free unlimited data access every weekend — while M1 dropped the curtain on mySIM3 98, its unlimited 4G mobile plan for S$98/month.

Now, Singtel is entering the fray by launching its first mobile plans to offer a combination of unlimited local data, talktime.
