Mentor Text Suggestions  - 
 
I show this to all my classes in the first week or two. Ted Talks are mentor texts and I have my students read the text for homework and watch online while following along. Students loved having both video and text to work with. This is a good sample of narrative, persuasive, sharing personal anecdotes....
Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

Gerald Graff's "Hidden Intellectualism" that we read in my demo. This is a good text to show many types of moves or blending text-types-- he's persuasive, narrates personal anecdotes to make a point, references cultural markers from his childhood, etc. Let me know what else you see in this text!
