My review of the audiobook of Orange is the New Black.  (By the way, I highly recommend the TV show as well.)

Aragorn shout-out at the Forsythe NWR.

It's only $100 to personalize a board like this!  Chris and I should totally get one, since we got engaged here and all.

I'll be mad if you don't put "Bender Bending Rodriguez" directly below Mildred.

This past Saturday, on the way to Book Club, I put on Spike, because I'm in a jazz mood lately and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band plays on Spike.

When "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" was done, I listened to it again.  And again.  And again.  I'm pretty sure I could listen to that song 24 hours in a row.  Here is a bulletted list to explain why:

- it's Elvis Costello
- with Alan Toussaint on the pinano
- and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on . . . brass
-it has insightful (or something) lyrics in the beginning
-which devolve into delightful stream-of-consciousness nonsense, the most sensical line of which is "Have you ever seen a stare like a Persian cat?"
-one can sing/yell loudly along with it, and point a lot.  As I did.  Walking down the streets of Park Slope. Deal with it.

Hello +Jonathan Morris !  Okay so this year I resolved that 50% of the books I read will be by female authors.  I'm doing well on the print book front and the audiobook front, but not so hot on the graphic novel front.  At some point I should just go to my main library branch and peruse what they have, but do you have any suggestions?  Of woman-authored comics?

(P.S. I did reserve Love & Rockets at my library after you talked about them the other day.  I think I had previously thought (not that I have thought overly much about Love & Rockets before, aside from realizing that it exists) it authored by two ladies!  So that was a minor disappointment.)

(P.P.S. I'm putting this on the internet instead of sending you an email so that other people can chime in.)

Well, I love Jill Thompson's work and I highly recommend Beasts of Burden - it's Hellboy-with-Housepets, but I do have to warn you, it can be heartbreaking for a pet owner. Also a big fan of Becky Cloonan who's done a lot of work with Brian Wood (a creator who's not only a dude but unfortunately been implicated in some ghastly sexual harassment stories), and their collaborative Conan book (Queen of the Black Coast) in particular is terrific.

And then there's Ramona Fradon, an artist who predominantly worked in the 60s and 70s and is one of my favorites (I own a few original pieces by her, in fact). It's corny and hip in a "cool dad" kind of way, but her work with Bob Haney on Metamorpho is one of the best superhero comics ever...

Here's my review of The Lathe of Heaven.  It's not a very good review, but it is a very good book.

I tidied my desk yesterday!  You should have seen it before, it was covered with like three separate stacks of paper that weren't stacks so much as . . . mounds.  Anyway, I guess I like my dog or something, yeesh.

Here is the painting that Chris got me for my birthday.  It's a sandhill crane.  I hung it at work, and I get to look at it whenever I come back to my desk!  It's lovely.
