*EDUCATION NOW! In this June 2015 Edition we welcome the return of Scott Bultman; to discuss The History of Kindergarten from Froebel to Modern Day.  Listen: http://www.educationnowhermes.com/

The Kickstarter project for the first documentary on the History of
Froebel Kindergarten, one of the world's oldest, largest and most
influential institutions. This project provides an opportunity to capture
interviews with important researchers ... many who are near the end of
their careers. We are fast losing direct connections to this history. Many
experts are in their 80s and beyond. Today, the remnants of Froebel's work
can be seen in the offshoots it inspired: Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio
Emilia.

The time to act is now. The purpose for making the film is to tell the
story of what Froebel originally intended for Kindergarten and how that
idea spread worldwide and mutated into our current preschool system.

Kindergarten has impacted American culture in many ways, through
architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright, Buckminster Fuller), Organizations (NEA,
ACEI, National Louis University, Stanford University), celebrities such as
Helen Keller.

If these get the attention of the average person they will have an
opportunity to better understand the historical context of the current
educational environment (testing, homeschooling, Common Core).

The History of Kindergarten:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/froebel/froebel-kindergarten-film

Scott Bultman believes Froebel's method is entering a new cycle of
interest due to a recent focus on K-12 design education and returning
play/creativity to the classroom. Froebel is the gold standard of early
childhood education and combines the splinter methods (Montessori, Waldorf
and Reggio) into more than the sum of the parts. With strong historical
anecdotal evidence from the careers of Frank Lloyd Wright, Buckminster
Fuller, and the Bauhaus artists, the Froebel method is now being used in
the graduate school levels in design education. The jobs of the 21st
century will require ever increasing visual literacy and competency in
geometry. With the new STEM initiative, Scott believes the Froebel method
is worth a second look.

Froebel's great insight was to recognize the importance of the activity of
the child in learning.  He coined the term "KINDERGARTEN" and introduced
the concept of Free Work.  Activities in the first kindergarten included
singing, dancing, gardening and self directed play with the Froebel Gifts.

Scott was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He developed an
early interest in computers but his passion for music took over in high
school  He graduated from The University of Michigan with a dual major in
music composition and film video. He and his family live on the four acres
remaining of an apple orchard established before the Civil War.  They have
a farmhouse, two barns, a windmill, an outhouse, a garden, and some very
old fruit trees.  He says it is like a modern version of Green Acres, and
they try to have the best of both rural and suburban living.

*EDUCATION NOW! In this April 2015 Edition of Education Now I welcome Phillip Cantor M.Ed.; Teacher at cps and Science Department Chairperson at North Grand High School for a focus on the recent mayoral election in Chicago. Listen: http://educationnowhermes.com/

Mayor Rahm Emanuel won re-election in a hard-fought runoff against challenger Jesús "Chuy" García. Emanuel defeated García with a margin of around 55 percent to García’s 44 percent. Emanuel raised $23 million for the campaign, three times García’s $6 million. García is the son of Mexican immigrants, and his rise to such prominence shocked the nation’s political establishment by forcing Emanuel into the runoff earlier this year. Emanuel has faced public dissatisfaction over his closing of 50 schools in mostly African-American neighborhoods, his handling of a 2012 teachers’ strike, and the city’s high murder rate and levels of gun violence.

Jesús "Chuy" García was asked by Karen Lewis, the Chicago union leader who had been considering a bid to unseat Mayor Rahm Emanuel, to run for the office. She did not run as she continues treatment after surgery for cancer.  Ms. Lewis, a longtime high school chemistry teacher, gained national attention for leading Chicago Public Schools teachers on a strike in 2012 and later criticizing Mr. Emanuel for supporting the closing of dozens of schools.

In Sept 2012 we did our first interview with Phillip on the Chicago Teachers Strike. We did an update on the Strike with Phillip in Nov of 2012.  Then again in July of 2013; Phillip joined me for a focus on The Fight for Public Education.  I invited Philip back in June 2014 for more news on the struggle in Chicago Public Schools, and to talk about Public Education in General.

Phillip Studied Education policy at University of Illinois at Chicago He is one of the elected teacher reps on the North - Grand Local School Council.  He has experience in neuroscience research, media production, and public education. He is the chair of the Science Department and teaches Biology, Environmental Science and AP Psychology

Phil is on the Leadership Team of Teachers for Social Justice. He has a strong interest in education as a force for social justice and civil and human rights.
 http://www.teachersforjustice.org/

Phil believes in making science inquiry based - to that end he's done a variety of projects with his students such as converting a diesel Mercedes Benz to run on waste vegetable oil, started a low power FM radio station that broadcast student writing projects and he sponsored a podcasting club for his students.

Phillip says he believes in community-oriented solutions that turn schools into community centers that can provide resources for parents in economic distress. He says that if schools can't help distressed parents provide a stable home environment for children, then that limits students' ability to learn in the classroom.

Cantor is a member of the Chicago Teachers' Union (CTU), and participated in the citywide teachers' strike in Fall of 2012. The strike was the first one authorized by the CTU in 25 years, and was called after they refused the city's offer of pay increases for some and layoffs for others, and when the city refused their demands to expand programs like art and music in underfunded schools.

A 2002 study by Arizona State University found that students learning from unionized educators statistically achieved more than those learning from teachers who didn't have a union. This could be because unionized teachers can advocate for students openly without fear of retribution from
principals or school boards. It could also mean that unions like the CTU tend to be some of the only groups that advocate for equity in school districts.

*****EDUCATION NOW!  Feb. 2015 Edition: It brings me great pleasure to welcome the return of Katy Farber; teacher, author, and blogger from Vermont, to talk about her new book "The Order of the Trees"; a middle level/young adult novel that will be out in May.
          Listen: http://educationnowhermes.com/
Katy is currently a teacher in Central Vermont, and she also writes about education, parenting, environment and sustainability for various websites and publications.  She is also the mother of two adorable girls.

The Order of the Trees is about Cedar, who was found as a baby under an old growth tree in the Vermont woods. It is a story about Cedar's sixth grade year, her first true friend, and how their fate is connected to the magical woods in which she was found.

"The Order of the Trees" is published and avaialable through

If you order during the PRE-ORDER period and let Katy know (in the comments on any of our Facebook pages, or her Twitter or websites) she would be happy to send you a previously unpublished short story about redemption on a junior high bus called "Out of the Trash Heap" and sometimes called "Bus 10" that was filled with spit balls, harassment and exclusion. This story created a forum for those who experienced similar traumatic events on junior high buses. Many found the story validating and
Katy wrote that she was grateful for this as it has helped her to process this challenging time as well.

*EDUCATION NOW! In this November 2014 Edition I welcome Jen Deleh Pasewalk to discuss the creation of an Anderson Valley California Alternative Public School Listen: http://educationnowhermes.com/

Jen Deleh Pasewalk also know as Jennifer Deleh Mayne currently works at the Anderson Valley Elementary School as a PE teacher. In 2006 she Started Working at Anderson Valley Elementary School. Deleh Graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1997. She worked at a few elementary schools before coming to work in the Anderson Valley Schools. After her studies at Sonoma State University, Deleh asked that I be her mentor in BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) while she completed her California Teaching credential. At that time she was facilitating a program through Anderson Valley Schools for those seeking an alternative, and home schooling students and their parents. She had a vision of creating a working alternative for those who chose not to use the traditional Public Schools in Anderson Valley. In 2008 she Graduated from Sonoma State University.

Deleh left the area soon after she completed her California Teaching Credential, and settled in Santa Rosa, Ca. Before returning to Boonville in 2012, she had two children; Ananda, her daughter, is now 5, and Tyce, her son is 4.

Deleh and Credentialed California Teacher Seasha Rose Robb met in Anderson Valley, and they realized they both shared the same dream of creating an Alternative Public School in Anderson Valley.
