**EDUCATION NOW! Welcome to the August 2016 edition of Education Now! I am your host, Athena Melville. My focus in this Podcast, is the 2016 Election. I started broadcasting in 2006 with the goal and mandate to empower and inform; parents, teachers and the public to resist and fight against the privatization and the destruction of Public Education in the United States.
LISTEN:http://www.educationnowhermes.com/

I say in the Podcast that I love President Barack Obama, I don't agree with everything he supports, but I never question his motives. I will miss him, and especially this past year, I have gone directly to his Press Secretary's page to read what he or Michelle Obama said in a Public setting. The media was so distorted and lacked a focus on the OBSTRUCTION of Obama, which was, as Bernie Sanders voiced publicly on the Floor of the Senate; "Pure Racism!" What Obama managed to accomplish given these odds is AWESOME!

*BLACK LIVES MATTER:Movement for Black Lives Calls for Reparations & "End to War Against Black People" *GUEST: ASH-LEE HENDERSON: I think that one of the important things to think about on the local level is the Vision for Black Lives as a tool. So this is, again, a platform that lifts up transformative demands. And on the local level, that can look like calling for community control of the institutions that are supposed to be serving your community, so whether that’s community control of the police or community control of your school board and schools, any of the
institutions that are supposed to be created to serve your community. We also think that the demands around investment into communities and divestment from the systems that harm us is definitely a municipal, local demand. So, whether that looks like divestment from militarized policing and investment in black futures, there are so many ways that it can play out. *THE DENIAL OF SCIENCE in Public Education, by not focusing on Child Growth & Development ... that is what this reflects. And of course the mainstream media fostered and supported this DENIAL OF SCIENCE, by presenting BUSINESS LEADERS with PROFIT TO MAKE, as EXPERTS IN EDUCATION. The Disturbing Transformation of Kindergarten
March 6, 2014 | DianeMarie One of the most distressing characteristics of education reformers is that they are hyper-focused on how students perform, but they ignore how students learn. Nowhere is this misplaced emphasis more apparent, and more damaging, than in kindergarten.

SISTER SIMONE CAMPBELL: Well, what I think is really important is that we, as Catholic sisters, are used to being in community. And I believe one of the problems of our time is the hyperindividualism. And so, what happens on the bus is the—well, right now, we’re nine on the bus. And the nine of us get off, and we’re already community, so everyone’s welcomed in. Everyone is welcome, whether you agree with our politics or not. If you commit to do your part to mend the gap, then you get to sign our bus. And our hope is, by creating community, then we will see the needs of others and be willing to engage in the hard work of change. ******SOCIAL JUSTICE*** Society Is Failing Our Families: Sister Simone Campbell on Inequality, Donald Trump & Women's Health Sister Simone is a lawyer and poet SISTER SIMONE CAMPBELL: Well, we’re on the road to discover the real reasons why there’s such income and wealth disparity in our nation. We are heartbroken at the fact that people can work full-time for minimum wage and not be able to support their families. And what we know is that policies made this problem. So policies can change it. We’re not as great as Dr. Stiglitz, but we have seven simple policies that we think could make change. And the one that we lead with is a change in tax policy: Everyone should pay their fair share and invest in our nation. That’s what we’re on the road to say, is we’re in this together. Let’s make this work.

*EDUCATION NOW! In this March 2016 edition it is my great pleasure towelcome Krista McAtee; Lecturer at Sonoma State University and the founder of TRANSFORMATIVE TRAVEL
Listen: http://educationnowhermes.com/
Transformative Travel creates experiences for International Restorative Justice; and offers youth an opportunity to heal the scars created by War.
Krista McAtee has been an educator for about 20 years. She has taught almost everything from preschool to high school, and she is now teaching elementary teacher candidates. Presently she is spending most of her time facilitating learning experiences for teachers in the area of Mathematics. In her free time she creates opportunities for youth to recognize their power to heal the world!

Krista grew up as a "River Rat" chasing frogs and turtles on the Russian River in Healdsburg where she developed a strong desire to learn the Spanish language and learn about the Latino cultures in the Healdsburg Elementary Schools. She completed her BA at Sonoma State University in Chicano/Latino Studies.

Krista earned her B/CLAD from Sonoma State while she was teaching full time. She says she has been blessed to work for the past 16 years in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District. She says she has also been very blessed to have had the opportunity to teach (and learn from) her own three children in many different ways over the past 15 years!
Krista recently recognized that in everything she does in her life, in all the roles that she holds, social justice is her goal and she believes that building relationships is the most meaningful and effective way to facilitate the development of a more just world. Now that she has come to understand this purpose in her life, she is constantly looking for the most transformative ways to participate in facilitating social justice in her community and the world. Her most recent project is creating experiences of affirmation, solidarity and action for youth from marginalized communities or groups, through volunteer travel. To this end,
Krista has started an organization called; TRANSFORMATIVE TRAVEL. A place where diversity is not just accepted, but affirmed, appreciated and nurtured, and where youth recognize their power to make a huge difference in the world, simply by caring.

*EDUCATION NOW! In this Edition of Education Now I welcome Phillip Cantor CPS teacher & CTU member, And, Peggy Robertson; teacher and OPT-OUT blogger, with UP-DATES on crucial issues in Public Education today. Listen: http://educationnowhermes.com/

Phillip Studied Education policy at University of Illinois at Chicago He is one of the new teacher reps on the North - Grand LSC. He has experience in neuroscience research, media production, and public education. He teaches Honors Biology, Biology, Environmental Science and AP Psychology, He has been a teacher for 13 years.

Cantor believes in community-oriented solutions that turn schools into community centers that can provide resources for parents in economic distress. He says that if schools can't help distressed parents provide a stable home environment for children, then that limits students' ability to learn in the classroom.

We spoke with Peggy in August last year, and in December of 2011, and since then, this revolution, which is National, has really taken off AND sparked outrageous retaliation from many districts.

Peggy Robertson has taught for 19 years. She earned her master ‘s degree in English as a Second Language at Southeast Missouri State University. She currently is a literacy interventionist at an elementary school in Aurora, CO and devotes the rest of her time to her work at United Opt Out National,

Rahm Emanuel has been under intense pressure and scrutiny since Novermber when the courts forced him to release the video of a white police officer shooting African American 17 year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times though he was posing no threat.
There have been massive protests against Rahm which continue today. The initial protests shut down Black Friday shopping on the "Magnificent Mile" of luxury shops in downtown Chicago. Protests have continued since. Black youth movements such as the Black Youth Project (BYP100) have gained power, and had multiple victories
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-trauma-center-community-activism-20150912-story.html

Rahm fired his police chief, and has lost many allies including some of his wealthy campaign backers and the Chicago Tribune newspaper which has always been a Rahm booster.

These protests have sparked national attention and justice department investigations of Rahm's police force and Legal Department.
