This post illustrates why a broken US patent system is choking innovation.

"InterDigital has a patent portfolio over 8,000 strong, with 10,000 more applications in the pipeline." [emphasis mine] WTF for?! Author Geordy Wang make the point that Google needs this patent portfolio to wage a counter attack against infringement lawsuits (MSFT just won a $5 royalty on every HTC Android smartphone.) And, that without it, Android may not survive because small innovators can't afford to defend themselves against the legal shit storm the giants can throw at them.

What a colossal waste of time, energy and money.
