Vote for DEB Graduate Student, Sam Westreich, on Thursday!!

Sam Westreich, a fourth year Integrative Genetics & Genomics PhD student in Prof. Ian Korf’s lab took first place in the UC Grad Slam finalist round on April 14th. He is a member of the DEB Program as well as one of the Biotechnology Program’s past Biotech Fellows.

Sam, along with 10 other finalists had 3 minutes in which to present their research at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. His research presentation is on, “Understanding the Gut Microbiome with Metatranscriptomics” and his research focuses on designing programs that will help sort big data once it has been collected.

Now Sam will represent UC Davis in the UC Grad Slam Finals that will take place this Thursday, on May 4th. It will be live streamed from San Francisco on the Grad Slam official website https://gradslam.universityofcalifornia.edu/). UC President Janet Napoliano is the emcee for the competition and the winner of the final round will receive a grand prize of $5,000.

Congratulations go to Amanda Dang, one of the Biotechnology Program’s exceptional DEB graduate students and NIH Trainee!

Amanda received an Outstanding Poster Award in the Colloid and Surface Chemistry Division Poster Competition. The award was received during the 253rd American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting held in San Francisco from April 2-6th.

Amanda Dang is in the Chemical Engineering graduate group and her mentor is Prof. Tonya Kuhl. Her NIH research is, “Applications of Supported Lipid Bilayers: Towards Crystallization of Integral Membrane Proteins and New Fundamental Insights”.

Congratulations to Sara Sukenik for winning first place in the graduate division of the 2016 International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Student Poster Competition held in Atlanta, GA on September 18-21, 2016!

Sara qualified to compete at the international level by first winning the San Francisco Bay Area ISPE chapter's local competition. Her winning poster was titled “Modeling Monoclonal Antibody Production in Nicotiana Benthamiana Plant Cell Suspension Culture”.

Sara is a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering with a Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology and is advised by Professor Karen McDonald in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
