Weather systems in the mid-latitudes, such as extratropical cyclones, are caused by instabilities of the jet stream flow .. Because the Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, sunlight is incident at different angles at different times of the year .. On Earth's surface, temperatures usually range ±40 °C (−40 °F to 100 °F) annually. Over thousands of years, changes in Earth's orbit affect the amount and distribution of solar energy received by the Earth and influence long - term climate and global climate change 、。。

Surface temperature differences in turn cause pressure differences .. Higher altitudes are cooler than lower altitudes due to differences in compressional heating .. Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a future time and a given location .. The atmosphere is a chaotic system, so small changes to one part of the system can grow to have large effects on the system as a whole .. Human attempts to control the weather have occurred throughout human history, and there is evidence that human activity such as agriculture and industry has inadvertently modified weather patterns 、。。

Titan's deadly atmosphere is laced with hydrocarbons (including propane, ethylene (the plastic used in one - gallon milk jugs), and propylene (another food - container plastic), produced when sunlight interacts with the methane; these seem to condense, fall as rain, and evaporate again in a deadly version of Earth's own water cycle. In fact, Titan is thought to be similar to Earth conditions before oxygen became plentiful - though its "spring rains" last 30 Earth years 、。。

Jupiter's SuperMegaUltrastorm 、。。

Superstorm Sandy was big, covering half the continental United States .. But Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a storm as wide as three Earths, is the solar system's go - to for megastorms. The giant anticyclone may have been swirling since before Newton published his calculus, and can be definitively traced to at least the 1800s .. The spacecraft Galileo clocked winds in the gas giant's iconic spot at over 400 mph - halfway to Mach 1 and far faster than any wind recorded on Earth - so bring a sturdy umbrella .. The Freak Winds of Neptune 、。。

Winds on Neptune are supersonic, clocking in (at their fastest) at around 1,500 mph, the fastest in our solar system and faster than an F-35 jet .. They would easily break the sound barrier on Earth, meaning you'd hear them shrieking toward you across the blasted rockscape, but only after they'd already whipped you into the sky .. At least the winds blow in relatively shallow bands, roughly 600 miles deep, and move and mix the atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and methane .. Rhythm of Love .. is a song by German hard rock band Scorpions .. It was released on Harvest/EMI .. The track appeared on the group's 1988 album Savage Amusement .. Guitarist Rudolf Schenker composed the music, with singer Klaus Meine providing the lyrics .. The video for the song, which depicts the band performing in a science fiction setting, features the model Joan Severance as one of several women enjoying the band's performance 、。。

Scorpions are a German rock band formed in 1965 in Hanover by Rudolf Schenker .. Since the band's inception, its musical style has ranged from hard rock to heavy metal .. The lineup from 1978–92 was the most successful incarnation of the group, and included Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar), Matthias Jabs (lead guitar), Francis Buchholz (bass guitar), and Herman Rarebell (drums) 、。。

Acoustica was recorded during three concerts held in 8 - 10 February 2001 at the Convento do Beato in Lisbon, Portugal .. What are gravitational waves and how are they detected? .. These ripples in space - time, sometimes caused by neutron stars colliding, were recently recorded in the groundbreaking LIGO - Virgo observation 、。。

Gravitational Waves .. are the disturbance in the fabric ("curvature") of spacetime generated by accelerated masses and propagate as waves outward from their source at the speed of light .. They were first proposed by Henri Poincaré in 1905 and subsequently predicted in by Albert Einstein on the basis of his general theory of relativity .. Gravitational waves transport energy as gravitational radiation, a form of radiant energy similar to electromagnetic radiation .. Newton's law of universal gravitation, part of classical mechanics, does not provide for their existence, since that law is predicated on the assumption that physical interactions propagate at infinite speed - showing one of the ways the methods of classical physics are unable to explain phenomena associated with relativity 、。。

Gravitational - Wave astronomy is a branch of observational astronomy that uses gravitational waves to collect observational data about sources of detectable gravitational waves such as binary star systems composed of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes; and events such as supernovae, and the formation of the early universe shortly after the Big Bang 、。。

On 11 February 2016, the LIGO and Virgo Scientific Collaboration announced they had made the first observation of gravitational waves .. The observation itself was made on 14 September 2015, using the Advanced LIGO detectors .. The gravitational waves originated from a pair of merging black holes .. After the initial announcement the LIGO instruments detected two more confirmed, and one potential, gravitational wave events .. In August 2017, the two LIGO instruments, and the Virgo instrument, observed a fourth gravitational wave from merging black holes, and a fifth gravitational wave from a binary neutron star merger .. Several other gravitational-wave detectors are planned or under construction 、。。

In 2017, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish for their role in the detection of gravitational waves 、。。

The discovery was made possible by three space telescopes, and it means we have found moons around practically every large dwarf planet more than 600 miles across in our cosmic neighborhood 、。。

Astronomers pinning it down to somewhere between 150 miles to 250 miles in diameter 、。。

In 2015, a moon was found around the distant dwarf planet Makemake .. So now, practically all of the largest dwarf planets we know about, except for one named Sedna, have moons. And that gives us a bit more clues about how these space rocks formed 、。。

"It’s possible that these moons are the results of distant bodies colliding at just the right speeds when the Solar System was being born 4.6 billion years ago" scientists say 、。。

Massive Dust Storm Raging Across Mars Endangers NASA Rover 、。。

One of the thickest dust storms ever observed on Mars has been spreading for the past week and a half .. The storm has caused NASA's Opportunity rover to suspend science operations, but also offers a window for four other spacecraft to learn from the swirling dust 、。。

NASA has three orbiters circling the Red Planet, each equipped with special cameras and other atmospheric instruments .. Additionally, NASA's Curiosity rover has begun to see an increase in dust at its location in Gale Crater 、。。

NASA engineers attempted to contact the Opportunity rover today but did not hear back from the nearly 15 - year old rover .. The team is now operating under the assumption that the charge in Opportunity’s batteries has dipped below 24 volts and the rover has entered low power fault mode, a condition where all subsystems, except a mission clock, are turned off .. The rover’s mission clock is programmed to wake the computer so it can check power levels 、。。

If the rover’s computer determines that its batteries don't have enough charge, it will again put itself back to sleep .. Due to an extreme amount of dust over Perseverance Valley, mission engineers believe it is unlikely the rover has enough sunlight to charge back up for at least the next several days 、。。

The Martian dust storm that has blotted out the sun above Opportunity has continued to intensify .. The storm, which was first detected on May 30, now blankets 14 - million square miles (35 - million square kilometers) of Martian surface - a quarter of the planet 、。。

How Do Ion Engines Work 、The Most Efficient Propulsion System Out There 、。。

Why we’re stuck with chemical rockets .. Seriously, exploding a bunch of hydrogen or kerosene is the best we can do? 、。。

Good news, there are other, exotic science fiction-sounding propulsion systems out there which use electromagnetic fields to accelerate atoms, allowing their spacecraft to accelerate for months at a time 、。。

Talking about ion engines, of course, and several spacecraft have already used these exotic thrusters to perform some of the most amazing missions in the exploration of the Solar System 、。。

Ion Thruster 、。。

An Ion Thruster or Ion Drive .. is a form of electric propulsion used for spacecraft propulsion .. It creates thrust by accelerating ions with electricity .. The term refers strictly to gridded electrostatic ion thrusters, but may more loosely be applied to all electric propulsion systems that accelerate plasma, since plasma consists of ions 、。。

Ion thrusters are categorized by how they accelerate the ions, using either electrostatic or electromagnetic force .. Electrostatic thrusters use the Coulomb force and accelerate the ions in the direction of the electric field .. Electromagnetic thrusters use the Lorentz force .. In either case, when an ion passes through an electrostatic grid engine, the potential difference of the electric field converts to the ion's kinetic energy 、。。

Ion thrusters in operational use have an input power need of 1 - 7 kW, exhaust velocity 20 - 50 km/s, thrust 25 - 250 millinewtons and efficiency 65 - 80% .. though experimental versions have achieved 100kW, 5N 、。。

The Deep Space 1 spacecraft, powered by an ion thruster, changed velocity by 4.3 km/s while consuming less than 74 kilograms of xenon .. The Dawn spacecraft broke the record, with a velocity of 10 km/s 、。。

Applications include control of the orientation and position of orbiting satellites (some satellites have dozens of low - power ion thrusters) and use as a main propulsion engine for low - mass robotic space vehicles (such as Deep Space 1 and Dawn) 、。。

Ion thrust engines are practical only in the vacuum of space and cannot take vehicles through the atmosphere because ion engines do not work in the presence of ions outside the engine .. Additionally, the engine's minuscule thrust cannot overcome any significant air resistance. Spacecraft rely on conventional chemical rockets to initially reach orbit 、。。

Xenon 、。。

Xenon .. is the preferred propellant for ion propulsion of spacecraft because it has low ionization potential per atomic weight and can be stored as a liquid at near room temperature (under high pressure), yet easily evaporated to feed the engine .. Xenon is inert, environmentally friendly, and less corrosive to an ion engine than other fuels such as mercury or caesium .. Xenon was first used for satellite ion engines during the 1970s .. It was later employed as a propellant for JPL's Deep Space 1 probe, Europe's SMART-1 spacecraft and for the three ion propulsion engines on NASA's Dawn Spacecraft 、。。
