There may not always be a rainbow after the rain, but there are always crazy magical clouds.

Great photo, great story.
[Antoinetta] This is Antoinetta. I took a candid photo of her last month in front of her Dundas Street shoe shop, called Capri Shoes. At the time that I took the shot, she asked in her Italian-accented English: "but why do you want to take my photo?". I responded with a matter-of-fact "because I think you're beautiful" and was off on my way. I didn't think too much of it at the time, but did really like the photo - more for the exchange than for the merits of the image itself.

Over the weekend I went on a printing spree, printing off a bunch of 8x10 photos, mostly for friends, family, and a couple of clients. I did decide also to print this photo of Antoinetta with the intention of dropping it off for her. I walked into her shop this afternoon and was greeted by her husband, Angelo. They looked confused at first but then made the connection once I showed them the image.

What transpired after that will be with me for a long time. I was invited to the back of the shop and was treated like family. They insisted on making me an espresso which I accepted (it was fantastic) and wanted to give me a nice pair of slippers to use in my condo. I respectfully declined citing my already extensive sneaker collection. I asked them questions about their shop and life back in Italy. Angelo has been making/repairing shoes for over 75 years. They've had the shop now for 50 years!

They're proud parents and grandparents. I guess in a lot of ways their story and journey reminded me a lot of my own family. They're extremely hard-working immigrants bending over backwards to give their kids better lives. I was barely able to hold my shit together. More than anything, they are great people and I'm so thankful that a $1 photograph could bring so much joy to them. As I said my goodbyes, they invited me back any time for an espresso. I'll be sure to be back soon.
