so angry. maybe libraryland has been too passive for too long and that’s why folks think they can bully us? maybe we don’t market ourselves well enough so folks don’t understand what we do and how we do it? or maybe folks just aren’t capable of handling critical discourse? Edwin Mellen Press is suing Dale Askey (and McMaster University, his current employer) because after evaluating their products and finding them lacking, he had the audacity to ...

This is where I just don't understand politics on the American right.
I'm always amused whenever conservatives get to play "gotcha" when some liberal says something politically incorrect, or expresses a belief more in tune with Republicans. Because you know those same conservatives don't really care about the issue; it's just a brief moment when they finally get to win a round in a game they never wanted to play (hell, they're still trying to figure out the rules). One again I turn to Ta-Nehisi Coates, who got me t...

Fantastic commentary.
Responding to Harvard Business Review blogs, wherein it is stated, "Doctors in India and Rwanda do not know anything more about the science of eye care or cardiac surgery or treating HIV/AIDS patients. But they do know how to deliver quality care at lower cost. By comparison, there is something highly inefficient about the health care delivery in the U.S. — and much to learn from poor countries." If I want my house cleaned in Canada, it will cost...

This happened to me in Bahrain. The hotel internet was outrageously expensive, and when I purchased a day to try it out, the injection of shoddy JavaScript into the pages made using the internet completely unusable.
Brian X. Chen, for the NYT Bits blog: After some sleuthing, Mr. Watt, who has a background in developing Web advertising tools, realized that the quirk was not confined to his site. The hotel’s Internet service was secretly injecting lines of code into every page he visited, code that could allow it to insert ads into any Web page without the knowledge of the site visitor or the page’s creator. Yet another reason to bring your own 3G or LTE hot...

Dancing in the street over this!
Tor: Tom Doherty Associates, publishers of Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen, today announced that by early July 2012, their entire list of e-books will be available DRM-free. “Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time,” said president and publisher Tom Doherty. “They’re a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfect...

New CRCT regs look like a good idea.
Michael Geist, Weblog, March 29, 2012. This is something I can stand behind: a set of regulations from the CRTC, as excerpted by Michael Geist, describing actions a computer program cannot take without advising the user ("the person seeking consent must obtain an acknowledgement in writing from the person from whom consent is being sought that they understand and agree that the program performs the specified functions"): (a) collecting personal ...
