Many tabletop roleplayers have heard of Lamentations of the Flame Princess, but few have actually directly played it.

This game works well for those who are entering the hobby and for players tired of the lengthy, expensive, and complex roleplaying rules that are now quite common. It is well-designed, with seven character classes (Cleric, Fighter, Magic-User, Specialist, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling) and excellent rules for magic, encumbrance, and black powder firearms.

It has been designed to be gritty, and to minimize the "Power-Creep" of ever-expanding numbers and invulnerability that render many roleplaying games boring after a certain point.

The published physical edition contains some controversial art that is believed by some to distract or detract from the game rules, which are excellent.

The best way to try it without this problem is to download the zero-cost art-free .pdf from RPGNow and play a few sessions. Direct experimentation trumps preconceived opinions with this sort of thing.

The additional free publications below contain some art, so apply caution with minors or those prone to easy offense. These products have some graphic content so you might need to log into RPGNow with adult settings enabled to get at them:

Better Than Any Man LotFP Free Adventure:

This is a "pay what you want" product, so you can set the total to zero, or what you wish, in order to check it out. This complete regional module contains some horrific monsters and is set in the Thirty Years War period (1633), which is an excellent introduction to the early black powder firearms rules in LotFP:

"The average annual temperature in the United States will continue to rise, the authors write, making recent record-setting years 'relatively common' in the near future. It projects increases of 5.0 to 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit (2.8 to 4.8 degrees Celsius) by the late century, depending on the level of future emissions."
