This week on #Caturday, Hobbes gets tangled up in bed sheets, because he is Hobbes.

The videos are a bit long, but worth it, in my opinion.

Saw #ManOfSteel. Wow. Visually incredible. The fight scenes were intricate, fast and ferocious. Really appreciated the lengthy treatment of the Krypton backstory.

Also, its theatrical trailer is one of the best I've ever seen (and I watch a lot of trailers).

Watched it on IMAX Hyd, 3D. (Wikipedia calls it the largest 3D screen in the world, without references). Agree about visuals and backstory. Otherwise, Superman is always meh for me.

There were three stages of line, and starting in the members-only line around 9am on Sat, it took us over 2 hours to finally go under the water. Not quite worth the wait, IMO.

It boggles my mind that reform math has achieved this kind of traction. You can't engage in exploratory thinking without knowing the fundamentals cold (see: Google interview questions), and you can't know them cold without working through them time and time again.

I understand that educators want to encourage independent and creative thinking and minimize precious class time spent on rote tasks, but creativity isn't worth a damn if it isn't guided by well-honed skills and raw knowledge.

We need to let the true math educators -- those who understand the pedagogical usefulness of the "mechanical algorithms" -- dictate policy and curricula.

Wow, what a great piece.

"We often use technology to save time, but increasingly, it either takes the saved time along with it, or makes the saved time less present, intimate and rich. I worry that the closer the world gets to our fingertips, the further it gets from our hearts."

I liked the quotation by Simone Weil: "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity."
