No doubt that #robotics is a key component of mainstream automated assembly in #manufacturing processes today. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported that 2012 saw the second highest number of robots ever sold: 159,346 units. IFR estimates the worldwide market value for robot systems at $26 billion

Tips for maximizing gripper life: From Design News

As with any device, proper attention to design criteria is critical for the performance and product performance. Here are some tips to help maximize the life of a gripper:
1. Besides the obvious additional lubrication at regular intervals, correct sizing is critical.
2. Keep the tooling jaws short as possible.
3. Keep the center of mass of the gripped part as close to the gripper as possible.
4. Ensure that the X, Y and Z axes to which the gripper is attached have smooth acceleration and deceleration.
5. Maintain application temperatures within the rated guidelines of the gripper.

Say hello to the robots that will be competing in the December 2013 DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials at the Homestead-Miami Speedway! Which is your favorite?

The robots shown here are in various states of readiness. The teams have until December to complete their bots for the initial round of physical competition in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. The goal of the competition is to advance the technology required to create robots to assist humans in disaster response.

The six Track A robots will compete against seven teams using the Atlas robot, created by Boston Dynamics for DARPA, and against an unknown number of teams from Track D.

For more information on the Challenge, visit www.theroboticschallenge.org.

Gap between product and assembly process shrinks, yielding multiple benefits. Developing a closer tie between product design and assembly can yield major benefits that ultimately result in lower costs and higher quality. The closest tie between product design and assembly is actually incorporating significant adaptability of products to the assembly line.
