RIP Sir Col. Remembering that utterly sublime Missa Solemnis at the 2011 proms. And such a pleasure to be able to listen to a national BBC radio station devoting the vast majority of its morning output to the life and work of one person without becoming so irritated my blood pressure rises to dangerous heights.

"O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you."

Thinking of Iain Banks, with great sadness, and with much gratitude for all the books, and indeed saving science fiction for me. Not to mention all the friends, and in particular my wife.

Consider Phlebas and Look to Windward (which I've always read as a pair) remain two of my favourite novels of any genre.

This morning, as I was walking back home after dropping the kids off, I  found myself planning a re-read. It almost feels like a compulsion and I suspect the urge is akin to spending a lot of time with a family member/friend under similar circumstances.

Meanwhile the fates of the Eastern ['Greek'] Orthodox and Syrian ['Oriental'] Orthodox Archbishops Aleppo remains unclear after their kidnapping yesterday and reports of their release may be premature, according to their Melkite [Eastern Catholic] opposite number and their respective Patriarchs.

I weep for a country and a people I love.
