"Sometimes I think I should have practiced more on the piano. I could be performing at Carnegie Hall. Or I could be sitting in a cocktail lounge right now with somebody putting a dollar in the jar and me saying, “Thank you, sir. Sure, I’ll play ‘Melancholy Baby’ one more time.”
Clint Eastwood has occupied a corner bungalow on the Warner Bros. lot for 40 years, long enough to have directed 28 movies for the studio and know to keep a bag of peanuts handy for the squirrels who like to venture inside his office door.

After the world premiere of Mark Wahlberg 's new movie, "The Gambler," Monday night at the AFI Fest, a five-minute highlight reel of the actor's career played for the audience at the Dolby Theatre before Wahlberg came on stage for a post-screening Q&A.

Gotham Awards didn't give 'Foxcatcher' a best feature nom or any individual nods. But voters still liked the movie.
The Independent Filmmaker Project's Gotham Awards are voted on by separate, five-person committees composed mostly of film critics, so today's slate of nominees can be seen as an early indicator of what movies and performances might pop with critics groups later this year.

Can GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL become Wes Anderson's first best picture nominee?
We've been deluged with dozens of variations of "Birdman Soars" headlines in the last couple of days, as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's ambitious tale of a onetime comic book movie star's quest for reinvention opened to great business last weekend, grossing $415,000 in just four theaters.

Bill Murray's new movie "St. Vincent" played great at the Toronto Film Festival. Might it go over with Oscar voters, too?
Bill Murray Day at the Toronto International Film Festival ended with a torrential downpour reminiscent of the bishop's epic, final golf game in "Caddyshack" : a disaster, perhaps not of biblical proportions but for those waiting in line to see the gala premiere of Murray's new movie, "St. Vincent," certainly the equivalent of "human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together ... mass hysteria."

Steve Carell on 'low expectations' and the gift of making 'Foxcatcher.'
If you watched any of the 148 episodes of the long-running TV comedy "The Office" featuring Steve Carell , you probably feel like you know the guy. Funny. Decent. Full of good intentions. Handsome in a way that "Anchorman" director Adam McKay once described as: "He knows he'd be the best-looking guy in his town in Indiana."

'Selma,' a new film about the 1965 Martin Luther King Jr.-led voting-rights marches in Alabama, lands as a strong contender for the best picture Oscar.
Those standing in line outside Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre on Tuesday night for the 9 p.m. screening of Clint Eastwood 's "American Sniper" heard a loud roar go up from inside the historic building shortly after 8.

Can Jessica Chastain's indie drama, 'A History of Violence,' break through with Oscar voters. It premieres at the AFI Fest.
The AFI Fest's opening night gala might be the award season's equivalent of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx.

Eddie Redmayne's work in "The Theory of Everything" contains all the elements Oscar voters love. Plus, dude can rock a turquoise suit.
The Stephen Hawking biopic "The Theory of Everything" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday night. And if last year's fest is remembered as the moment it became obvious that "12 Years a Slave" was the movie to beat for the best picture Oscar race, this one could go down as the time when the lead actor awards picture became very clearly defined.

Julianne Moore might win a critics prize. But her movie, "Maps to the Stars," never stood a chance with the academy. It's just not a good movie.
David Cronenberg's curdled Hollywood satire "Maps to the Stars" screened for press and industry types Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival, a few days after Focus World acquired the movie for an early 2015 release.
