I had a letter published in the Midland Express today on the importance of factual accuracy in public debate. The letter was written partly in response to the many letters from climate change denialists published in newspapers and also the letters making ridiculous claims about wind power and smart meters that often appear in the Express

My video message urging Australian Prime Minister +Julia Gillard and Senator Bob Carr to take action for Tibet.

This is part of an action by Student for a Free Tibet (SFT) to send short video messages to world leaders asking them to take action for Tibet. See https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-N2_NmbljEmpm2Ies6JeG3Afn6843tJq for more videos.

I think the key point is that they just need to speak frankly about the situation and let the Chinese know that the status quo is unacceptable. The Chinese government is in a very difficult situation at the moment. It has lost control of the situation in Tibet and is unsure how to respond. International pressure at this time can have a significant effect.

The Australian government has released a white paper titled "Australia in the Asian Century." The paper seems very focused on economics and education. Human rights are only briefly discussed on one page. There is nothing about promoting democracy.

West Papua is a good example of Australia's failure to take adequate action in the face of serious human rights abuses. Similar problems exist throughout the region. There are only a handful of consolidated democracies in Asia and as one of them Australia needs to take a leadership role.

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. 141 countries are now abolitionist in law or in practice. 21 countries recorded executions in 2011, compared to 31 countries ten years ago. The world continues to move towards abolition. More information at http://www.worldcoalition.org.

Kevin Rudd deserves kudos for his very clear argument in favour of same-sex marriage in response to a question from a Christian pastor on ABC TV's Q and A.

I took this photo at the dam out the back of the farm. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out considering it was taken with a mobile phone. A filter has been applied with the flickr app.

Lee Ping-hua (李秉樺) from Taiwan travelled around Japan taking photos of people holding a "No Nukes" poster. His work was popular on the backpackers.com.tw website and I found out about it from an article in the Taipei Times (http://goo.gl/lzUBV).

This is a short note written by Julian Assange about his forthcoming book Cypherpunks. The book, Assange writes, is not a political manifesto but a cry of warning about the emerging threats to liberal democracy.
This note came into OR Books from Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. It is intended for publishers considering licensing language rights for his new book, CYPHERPUNKS, but we think it’s a...
