Creativity Is Not An Accident - A response to @nytopinion / @Pagankennedy #ideas #breakthrough #myths

Many of our popular stories of discovery are portrayed as accidents or matters of luck. We love these stories as they make creativity seem easy and fun, regardless of how misleading they are. A recent NYTimes opinion titled Cultivating The Art of…

The Problems with 'Best Of' Lists #BestOf2015 #2015 #bestof

I like “best of lists” as they are fun, convenient and easy to argue about with friends, but beneath their luster lurks notable problems if you seek great works. It’s far too easy to forget the label “best” is an invention granted by the list maker, whose…

I wish the Amtrak station near us was more affordable to get to nearby places, but it's way cheaper by bus. The train fare from here to NYC for example is about the same as the cheapest air fare, which are both about 3x the bus fare, and the train is 11 hours, but the bus is 7 hours. East coast is not nearly as scenic as cross-country or even the west in general. Great article btw - thank you!

My Best Posts of 2015

Best of lists are fascinating things. They have their problems, but they’re a fun way to summarize, review and organize simultaneously. My method was simple: I reviewed all of my posts of 2015, sorted them by popularity and comments (I read every one and…

Holiday Music That Won't Kill You: A List #music #suggestionswelcome #HappyHolidays

One consistent annoyance of the holiday season is the terrible music that comes along with it. It seems stores and coffee shops resort to the blandest, most cloying choices in some desperate effort to make sure we are 100% certain what time of year it is.…

Designers, Morality and the AK-47 a response to @monteiro #design #evil #ux

Recently Mike Monteiro wrote about whether the AK-47 is worthy of study for a design student. I agree and disagree with him at the same time, which led me to write this response. He wrote: If a thing is designed to kill you, it is, by definition, bad…

It's a two-sided subject obviously. It could be argued that it has merits from a functional aspect, and also that it's somewhat ugly from an aesthetics aspect, or offensive from a implementation aspect.  Kind of like complimenting someone you absolutely hate for something they do well.
