This was my second time here and it was just as good as the first. I started out with the caesar salad and what was interesting was the cheese crisp they had on it. It was reminiscent of rice cake, but much better tasting. We had a loaf of bread with the salads and they have a special pastrami butter, which must be tried! There is no actual pastrami in it, instead it has the smoky flavor of it. The butter adds more depth to an otherwise normal starter. Our waiter was great at explaining the specials and helping us decide on great wines to go with dinner. I had the Michael David Petite Petit Syrah 2011, she had the Kim Crawford 2014 Sauv Blanc. We both picked the filet mignons, mine was the 6 oz regular and she had the 6 oz special with marsala sauce. They were both cooked to order and were absolutely delicious! The steaks melt in your mouth like butter. The sides were really great too. I had the standard mashed potatoes and asparagus and she had the more modern mushroom risotto and green beans. We decided to split dessert as we were full from the meal, and went with the crème brûlée. This was my first and about her 100th. The creme was good, but she said the sugar was slightly burnt. More than it should have been anyway. It did have a burnt marshmallow flavor to it. It didn't ruin the meal at all, but maybe we should have gone with the chocolate cake instead.

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is pleasing, and the service is excellent. Sometimes you have to wait a lot for your food.

steaks here are better than they are at the business-class chains like flemings and mortons. the cajun-spiced filet is always a good choice. wine list is decent and affordable.

We've visited with family several times and always enjoy delicious well prepared dishes. The menu, broad enough to cater to most anyone, ranges from raw seafood to superb steaks and chops. The wine list is very good and service is excellent. We'll be back!

Best restaurant around. Food quality and service are always top-notch. Have never been disappointed with anything in the past 10 years. The Maytag Blue chips are a must.

Let me explain my average score. We have been dining at J. Gilbert's for years, but had not been there in about 10 months or so due to our busy schedule. We always raved to friends and family about the excellent food, the amazing service and the overall experience. We went there last night for my wife's birthday and left wondering whether a change in management had occurred or if J. Gilbert's is just going in a different direction. Service was good, but nothing like in the past. The food while overall good, just seemed to be lacking that J. Gilbert's flair of the past. I read a couple other reviews that have said the service levels do not compare to past dining experiences. That is really unfortunate that is what separated J. Gilbert's from everyone else in the greater Hartford area. We will return to try again, but our expectations our much lower now.
