Google Contributor: Contributing to an Ad Free Web?
Opponents of the business model of generating revenue through on-site ads, used by giants like Google and Facebook all the way down to Mommy Blogger sites, have often argued that it would be better if we paid for the stuff we use. If you're not the customer, these voices argue, you're the product. There have been loud calls for an alternative, a way to directly pay for the content you want to consume and the tools you want to use without being the product for ad targeting.
Well, Google is giving you what you want with Google Contributor. Pick a contribution level for the site of your choice, and all Google ads on the site are turned off. Forget an ad free YouTube service or an ad free Gmail, how about ad free AdSense?Update: I may have misunderstood the idea when I initially posted this. It appears that your contribution may turn off the ads on "participating sites", making this an even more appealing idea than it first seemed.
This could be a true Game Changer. If sites currently depending on ad revenue can crowdsource enough revenue from Contributors, then many might abandon or reduce their reliance on ads, allowing their content to shine through undisturbed by the machinations of Big Data Advertising. This could be a new revenue stream for millions of sites and further legitimize the web as a primary publishing platform at a time when many smaller players struggle to make as much as print used to.
If you're one of those voices, this is what you said you wanted. Time to pay the piper or stop complaining when ads interrupt his piping.#GoogleContributor
