Hello all!  I am a 5th and 6th grade teacher in up in Brewer.  I am glad to have come across this group while perusing through the Google for Ed. site.  I was sad to miss the #gafesummit last August, so I am very excited to see it has changed and is coming again soon!

In advance of Sochi 2014, teachers and their classes are invited to a Connected Classrooms Hangout on Air for "Science and Engineering of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games," a unique video series created by NBC Learn and the National Science Foundation, exploring the science and engineering behind the amazing athletics at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. First, watch the series at www.nbclearn.com/science-and-engineering-of-the-2014-olympic-winter-games. Then join us at an exciting Connected Classrooms hangout featuring NBC Learn producers and the scientists from the videos.

First up: Bioengineering professor JORDAN GERTON of the University of Utah will explain the physical concepts that underlie the moves that skiers and figure skaters need to do to reach for the gold medal.  Wed, Jan 29, from 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM Eastern Time.

Before the hangout, all participating classes are asked to watch the video featuring Jordan at www.nbclearn.com/science-and-engineering-of-the-2014-olympic-winter-games/cuecard/68293, and come prepared with questions. Also, bring a swiveling office chair to the hangout so Jordan can lead students through a simple experiment on angular momentum. Sign up here:

Happy Holiday fun with the Google Santa Tracker!

Anyone try to set up parent conferences via Google Calendars slots?  I did this year and sent out the link to the sign up calendar via email.  I also embedded the calendar on my classroom site.  Our students all have GMail accounts, so I explained that if the parent didn't have their own gmail, they could use their student's and sign up for a time that way.  I mentioned about signing in first, so they can see the calendar.

I had it work for about half of my parents.  The other half had various errors about getting the calendar to show up.  Some even said the times listed were way off.  Anyone else run into issues?  Don't know if there was just some mistake they were making or what...
