It is not an easy question... I have a benchmark page, but it is far from being comprehensive http://peazip.sourceforge.net/peazip-compression-benchmark.html
PAQ/LPAQ based algorithms are currently the best compressors, and Hutter Prize winners, but such extreme performances comes at cost of high CPU and memory usage.
With current generation machines best general purpose choices are algorithms like PPMd or LZMA/LZMA2; those are used in modern compression formats like .RAR, .ZIPX, .7Z, and FreeArc's .ARC, alongside special filters for multimedia files - large and not easy to compress, as usually already compressed with format specific lossy algorithms - either to enhance compression where applicable, or to skip compression (to enhance speed) where efforts would give poor results.
As a role of thumb, anyway, the best compression is the one who fits at best the needs of the user, so if speed and/or compatibility comes in first place .ZIP is still a good option.

PeaZip 5.2.2 released today.
The help system is improved, for better access to online and offline resources, and to translated documentation - a big thank you goes to all people contributing translations, making this possible.
Amongst various fixes and improvements, standalone minimal GUI (Tools > PeaExtractor and PeaUtils) are introduced for cases when narrower-focused interfaces are desired for basic archive/file management tasks.

PeaZip 5.3.0 released today.
This update introduces improved navigation bar, localized Windows context menu (main menu, Options), adds "Include only"/"Include also" fields in advanced filters for archive creation, adds a new synthetic archive information function, and introduces pre-set compression profiles for single-click switching between most common compression task, i.e. best compression, fast compression, protect with password, create self extracting archive, keep output under a specified size for mail attachment, etc.

PeaZip 5.2.1 released.
Improved secure file and free space deletion: all modes with n>=4 iterations now uses overwrite with all 0 and overwrite with all 1 (FF byte) for the two first iterations (followed by n-2 iteration overwriting with random data), faster and more secure. This mechanism follows recommendations for most of secure deletion protocols, as USAF System Security Instruction 5020, Schneier's Algorithm, Communications Security Establishment Canada ITSG-06, British HMG Infosec Standard 5 Enhanced Standard.
Translations and links to online resources are updated.

Earlier this month it was published experimental, user contributed, PeaZip build for Linux on ARM platforms: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/peazip-linux-arm.html

I love +PeaZip , I have been using it since I know the program, the versatility, the tools, the design, I even love the green peas logo, I wish there could be an easier way to make backup of files just like Toucan does for example.
