Gmail turns 10 today! No joke :)
How +Gmail Happened: The True Story 10 Years Later
/by +Harry McCracken

Ten years ago, I paid real cash on eBay for access to Gmail and Orkut, as demand was outstripping supply. This in depth piece talks to my friends +Paul Buchheit and +Kevin Fox about the engineering and design of the early product, with then product manager +Brian Rakowski and now PM +Alex Gawley about decision points and what made the service appealing to users a decade ago. It's a fun piece of web history here on April Fool's Day - and it's no joke.

One of the more fun gadgets I've been playing with lately is the inPulse smartwatch. It can silently buzz when you get a new email and show a preview of your email. It's has an API that works with many Android and Blackberry phones, so you can program your own custom apps to do things like move forward in a PowerPoint presentation or show stock quotes. It's pretty geeky, but in a very space-age way. I can see a lot of people wearing watches like this in a few years.

Vision is not an image fully formed. Vision is knowing where to look without necessarily knowing what to look for. Vision is the ability to see the trail of breadcrumbs, and the strength and conviction necessary to follow that trail despite not knowing where it leads.

Scrolling is broken in Google+. Pressing the spacebar scrolls a full page, but the top of the page is covered by a fixed position bar, meaning that less than a full page of content is ever visible, so a full page scroll causes a couple of lines of text to go from off the bottom of the page to below the top bar (and therefore never visible unless I use the arrow keys to go back up a bit)

I don't like that people who aren't by friends are sending posts directly to me (which show up in my email inbox). How can I turn that off without turning off email for posts sent to me by my friends?
