Last night's CTC ride to St Ives.

Yesterday evening's bike ride.
Nigel writes: Today was probably the second-hottest of the year so far, with temperatures of up to 28 C in the afternoon. Fortunately the evening brought more comfortable weather and a pleasing cool b...

The world model from The Limits to Growth now runs in your web browser, thanks to Brian Hayes.
Forty years ago I had my first close encounter with mathematical models of doomsday. The Limits to Growth, published in the spring of 1972, offered a grim vision of environmental and economic collapse, based on the implacable logic of a computer simulation called World3. For extra nerd-cred authenticity, the results of the simulation were set forth in crude black-and-white graphs reproduced directly from line-printer output. I wrote about The Li...

I got a new pair of shoes today, delivered from Wiggle. Ever since I first used SPDs (for those who don't know what they are, here's an explanation), I've used the same make and model of s...

I'm a Look girl. I could never get comfrotable with spds - the cleat area too small for me & I ended up with hotspots on the soles of my feet. Then the issue of never being able to clip in accurately first attempt - again due to small size of cleat. But yes, clipless are much better than platform pedals, with or without toestraps. Mr Wafflycat uses spds & WafflycatMinor can alternate between various systems without hassle.

The Report of the Hillsborough Independent Panel reveals that, as everyone suspected, the South Yorkshire Police deliberately and systematically altered their testimony to the Taylor enquiry ("The process of transition from self-taken recollections to formal Criminal Justice Act statements was presented as removing ‘conjecture’ and ‘opinion’ from the former, leaving only matters of ‘fact’ within the latter. Disclosed correspondence between SYP and the Force solicitors reveals that comments within officers’ statements ‘unhelpful to the Force’s case’ were altered, deleted or qualified (rewritten by the SYP team)") and briefed the press with untrue allegations that the disaster was caused by violent and drunken behaviour of the Sheffield supporters ("Documents disclosed to the Panel show that the allegations were filed by White’s News Agency, a Sheffield-based company. They were based on meetings over three days between agency staff and several police officers, together with interviews with Irvine Patnick MP and the South Yorkshire Police Federation Secretary, Paul Middup").

I think it’s good stuff. There was a +1 button, so I pressed it. Lots of cycling kit can only be washed at 30 deg C, and I find that they can start to whiff after a while. Adding this stuff to the wash seems to prevent that.

The Dean is a 300km Audax from Oxford out across the Cotswolds to the Forest of Dean and Chepstow, then back via Wiltshire. I had done this ride a couple of times before. In 2007 it was one of my Pari...
