HowTo create a batch import for DSpace using SAFBuilder, and then importing that ZIP using your browser to a collection in DSpace. No need for a DSpace sys-admin

Longsight has a very cool enhancement to DSpace in the pipeline. Building off of Richard Rodger's (MIT) DSpace 2.0 work for a Pluggable Assetstore, we've refactored the Bitstream Storage Manager, and it now has a clean interface, and implementations, namely Amazon S3 storage.

If you're moving your infrastructure into the cloud, S3 is a fantastic service that lets you store files, and leaves all the management to AWS. Think RAID-1000000. Plus, infinitely scalable, pay only for what you use, no limits, and extremely durable. So, in the old-world, you have to allocate enough disk to your system, and continuously monitor, and grow that drive every year or so. Or, just add so much disk up front, and that you won't run out. Plus, you need a replication strategy, where X failures are allowed before data integrity is at risk. So, instead of you fighting these fires, S3 just works, and its well priced.

Longsight's announcement is at:

The official announcement is at:

Code will be contributed to DSpace 6, its currently in our GitHub. The S3 implementation requires S3 access-key, secret, bucketname, preferred region (optional). Then you can use the S3 admin panel to enable encryption or cross-region-replication (replicas are stored 100's of miles apart). I'll make a screencast presentation demo'ing this feature too. No glacier implementation yet. I don't have enough elevator music to entertain a user for 6+ hours.

"Doing It Live", importing a Batch Load into DSpace through the User Interface, and then using the User Interface to run the curation task to generate the thumbnails. Is this the future, yes. But hopefully this feature becomes the past, and everything is this easy or easier.

I was definitely impressed at OR2014 by the Czech project CLARIN's feature packed Control Panel for DSpace. Out of the box, DSpace has 5 tabs in Control Panel, CLARIN has 27. Amazing.

Definitely strikes up the idea of what all should we have available to the admin.

What's your favorite thing about DSpace (what it does well), and your least favorite thing about DSpace (where it lacks)?

For me, my favorite thing about DSpace is the Curation Task system, which allows you to do actions from the UI. And one of my least favorite things is that submitted objects don't have a thumbnail right away.

So, I've built a Curation Task at Longsight that lets you run a PDF Thumbnail generator from the Curation Task system. It's still a little ways away, but conceivably, this could auto-run the curation task after submission.
