Understanding what motivates people is at the core of so many HR and management initiatives. Daily, great managers look to tap into what makes employees tick in order that their working lives should be more productive and satisfying. For us as individuals, building self knowledge about our "deeply embedded life interests" can help us manage our careers and job moves better. Debbie's blog on a useful research-based model identifies 8 fundamental drivers. Which chime with you? http://www.worktreeconsulting.com/?p=2901

We are starting a piece of Market Trend Analysis on Women in Engineering. We would like to meet some female engineers and crunch some numbers on gender balance across engineering companies in the South West of England. As well as being quite a hot topic in the media at the moment, barely a day goes by on twitter without mention of gender balance at boardroom level, or someone pointing to an article about getting girls into STEM subjects. But why do we care? A few months ago Matt wrote this blog post on our website about Women In Engineering discussing what might be preventing them studying and joining the profession. As you can see when you read it, he has a personal interest and a passion that shines through his writing. We hope that by taking on this piece of work we can stimulate some debate and share our findings with all those who participate.

Debbie has done a book review for the good people at HRZone. She has reviewed a book by Robert Kelsey called "What's Stopping You Being More Confident". A stimulating and challenging read for anyone with an interest in the issue of self-confidence and how it affects our own behaviour and that of others.
