In Florida, facing a violation of probation charge is extremely different than facing charges for a new crime. Since you have already been sentenced to probation, you no longer have as much legal protection including no statute of limitations, no automatic right to a bond while awaiting a hearing, and no right to jury trial, among other things.

Attorney Melinda Morris was a former assistant state attorney and has extensive experience prosecuting a variety of violation of probation offenses. With the experience she gained in that role, she understands how to weaken the prosecutions’ case and develop a strong defense strategy on your behalf to defend your freedom. #violationofprobation   #PinellasCounty

With the vast ocean and sunny weather, Florida is a prime place to go boating both for residents and tourists. However, boating under the influence is illegal and can result in harsh penalties including fines, jail time, and/or probation. Attorney Melinda Morris served on the DUI Manslaughter/ Vehicular Homicide Squad while a State Attorney and therefore has a deep understanding of the tactics used to prosecute. She can use her experienced to find weakness in the prosecution’s case and fight to protect your name. #BUI   #StPetersburg

One of the top issues for lawmakers this upcoming spring is to make texting and driving a primary offense in Florida. According to Senator Maria Sachs, statistics are showing that having the texting ban as a secondary offense is not working. In 2014, 26 texting and driving tickets were issued in St. Petersburg. That number is relatively low compared to the amount of people actually doing this. Since it is a secondary offense, officers cannot stop drivers for texting alone.

If arrested for a traffic offense, it is important to review your options with a defense lawyer before admitting guilt. #Florida   #textinganddriving

On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that police can’t extend a routine traffic stop to bring a drug-sniffing dog to investigate the car without any reasonable suspicion that another crime outside of the traffic offense has taken place. This decision was based on the case, Rodriguez v. United States and comes as a victory for people who want to prevent police intrusion. To find out more specifics on the ruling, check out our latest blog post.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case regarding the aspects of federal law that regulates and prohibits synthetic drugs. The main topic called into question is if the government must prove that the defendant knew or should have known that the substance was an analogue of a controlled substance to face conviction under the Controlled Substance Analogue Act of 1986.

While the ruling of the case would only have an effect on federal law, it could also impact how states like Florida address the issue of synthetic drugs. Learn more about this case and the synthetic drug problem in Florida. #syntheticdrugs   #Florida

The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) is officially opposing Senate Bill 528, which would expand medical marijuana legislation beyond last year’s legislation, the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act. The FSA announced their list of “core legislative principles” that they think would be needed if medical marijuana became legal in Florida. The association seeks to prohibit cannabis use as treatment for general pain and ban smoking marijuana as a treatment method.

One concern from a sheriff regarding the legislation is that marijuana is a “gateway drug.” Despite deep criticism by marijuana reform activists, the bill may still have a chance at passing in the legislature. #medicalmarijuana #Florida

Facing arrest for the first time is a very stressful and overwhelming experience. You may wonder how his mistake will affect your entire future, including education, employment, federal assistance, and housing options. Some common first time offenses include public intoxication, drug possession, DUI, and reckless driving.

An experienced attorney can fight for your entry into a pre-trial diversion program, which upon completion will result in the dismissal of all charges against you. Your attorney can also assist with subsequent record sealing or expunging, which is an appealing option for people concerned with background checks. #firsttimeoffender #PinellasCounty

The #Tampa Police Department seizes around 1,500 vehicles annually, more than any other law enforcement agency in West/Central  #Florida. Half of the vehicles that the department seizes are kept for agency use or turned into cash through either settlements with the original owner or through sale at auction.

Channel 10 Investigates showed recently how civil forfeiture was actually helping some agencies pad their budgets through intentionally targeting expensive cars and even when charges are dropped, vehicles are often not returned to the owner. They are also making money through a city ordinance that allows police to impound vehicles associated with misdemeanor crimes involving lewdness, prostitution, or drugs. Critics say that state laws make it clear vehicle seizures should be limited to felony crimes.
No law enforcement agency in West/Central Florida seizes more vehicles under Florida's Contraband Forfeiture Act than the Tampa Police Department.

Ms. Morris took the time to listen and actually complied with what the client requested. Ms. Morris, by listening and actually caring about the client, was able to have the case dismissed. Ms. Morris knew that what law enforcement did was illegal and when presented to the prosecutor's office, they agreed. It seems that Ms. Morris has established herself as a tough defense lawyer so much that the criminal justice system hears her.

Never bothered to give anyone a rating before. However, I felt so compelled to say something. My first impression was very poor. Who ever this guy is who answers the phone was of no help and very rude. Said don"t handle cases like mine, and before I was able to ask who you could recommed, he said you need a ....... something attorney,AND hung up on me. I just wanted to know what kind of an attorney he said. If this is how you operate, this is pathetic and I would never recommend your office. What a poor reflection of your office. Find someone who cares about there JOB !!! to answer phones. How RUDE !! Furthermore, after extensively reviewing there practices, YES. They do handle my case type !! AND was elaborating on how their office was the TOP firm to do so. GO FIGURE.

I highly recommend attorney Melinda Morris. I selected the Morris Law Firm and Ms. Morris after learning that she was a former state prosecutor and had experience in the type of criminal defense legal matter I was facing. Ms. Morris was able to explain to me in detail each step of the legal process, and put any fears I had at ease. Her office staff was a pleasure to work with and I was kept up to date on all aspects of my case. Ms. Morris was compassionate, efficient, and very effective at resolving my legal issue. I would recommend her to anyone seeking a criminal defense lawyer.

I cannot express my gratitude to the Morris Law Firm enough. I contacted Melinda Morris for assistance in a legal matter in June of 2011. During the first call I felt she was going to help and would be able to solve my issue. After explaining the process of how she could help she provided great detail of the steps that would be taken. Her staff members I spoke to during the process had the best customer service skills I have ever experienced. They were knowledgeable and I never felt I was a burden to them. I was most impressed with use of email to keep me informed when updates occurred and the completion of my request. Melinda, thank you for your help and personal service you provide. I wish you well and many years of a successful practice.

I would recommend Ms. Morris to anyone in the unfortunate position of needing a lawyer. She is completely honest and up front with her clients. She has a deep and personal knowledge of the justice system in Pinellas County. Ms. Morris is also aggressive and tenacious when pursuing one's case. She represented me, and my outcome was exactly as we expected. She will not do wrong by you.
