According to Business Insider, ad blocking is now “approaching 200 million.” Calling it a boycott is my wife’s idea. I say she’s right. Look at the definitions: Merriam-Webs…

There seem to be at least four different conjoined issues. 1. Ads, 2. Tracking, 3. Resource usage and 4. Malware.

I suspect that most people are really upset about are not the actual ads (excepting of course the worst of the worst, pop-overs, take overs etc.)

Feed people reasonable ads without the other problems and there would be fewer things for people to complain about.

I suspect this means feeding ads directly from publishers instead of 2nd and 3rd party ad networks. Effectively the publishers need to act as the proxy for the ads and any analytics that are required instead of forcing that to be done in the consumers browser.

Nice article at the NY Times showing the cost of data from popular sites.

The IAB said it has come up with code to help publishers detect even ad blockers that cloak their presence.

The discussions on this issue seem to all assume an all-or-nothing blocking regime, when the types of ads may be the critical variable. It may be that blockers that specifically filter out the most intrusive and obnoxious ads will work best for both sides. The unreasonable extremes on both sides demand all-or-nothing. The broad middle would probably accept reasonable ads in exchange for valuable content, like we did for printed media.

Spamming the Web with click-bait sites that push ads and offer no valuable content is just poisoning the well.
