ATTENTION UPDATE ON CANINE FLU

Canine Influenza (also known as the dog flu) is a virus that causes coughing, runny nose, decreased appetite and high fevers in dogs. There are two strains that are becoming widespread throughout the United States (H3N8 and H3N2). There have been no known cases of H3N8 in Michigan as of yet (although it has been reported in 42 states), but several reported cases of H3N2 in downstate counties. The virus is highly infectious and spreads very quickly from dog to dog ( through the air via a cough, bark, or sneeze and by contact with contaminated objects such as dog bowls and clothing). The best protection is vaccinating before it reaches our area, as it takes four weeks for vaccinations to become fully protective. We now have a vaccine that offers protection for your pups against both strains of the virus (older vaccines only protected against H3N8). The vaccine is initially given as a series of two injections given two weeks apart and then annual boosters are recommended for dogs who are at high risk (dogs that visit dog parks , downtown, doggie day cares, groomers, puppy classes and boarding facilities). Please contact our office if you have any further questions or to set up an appointment to start the vaccine series!

The past few mild winters in Northern Michigan has lead to an explosion of the tick population and the incidence of tick-borne diseases in our community... GRAND TRAVERSE AND OUR SURROUNDING COUNTIES ARE ON RED ALERT!! Is your flea/tick medication labeled to kill ALL tick species in our area? We recommend Vectra 3D or Bravecto for dogs and Catego for cats... keep your family safe this season!

MARCH 18-24 IS PET POISON PREVENTION WEEK. ☠ keep your pets safe.....🐾

"Pets are curious and often can’t resist smelling, tasting and sometimes swallowing foods, plants and other items in our homes that interest them,” said Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS, and assistant director at Pet Poison Helpline. “Poison-proofing your home is important. Taking simples steps such as making sure your houseplants are non-toxic and storing medications in secure areas will significantly reduce the chances that your dog or cat will come in contact with a toxic substance.”
