Interesting article in the Washington Post today on sugar free drinks and candy...
The main points are:
-sugar-free soft drinks, sports drinks and sweets can be just as harmful to teeth as the full sugar version.
-Researchers found that sugar-free foods won't directly lead to cavities, but they can lead to dental erosion, which can make the teeth more susceptible to decay.
-Sugared and sugar-free soft drinks have the highest acid content, followed by sports drinks.
The take home messages:
-Avoid both sugared and sugar-free drinks and stick to water! Fluoridated water is even better.
-If you do eat or drink something on the acidic side, rinse with water afterwards.
-Sugar-free gum is okay. Gum with xylitol as a top ingredient is even better!

How often should we all replace our toothbrushes? The ADA recommends starting off with a new brush every 3 months. There are even new startup companies (Quip) which will send subscribers a new toothbrush every three months. Consistency can be a helpful reminder in our busy lives!
A study from the University of Manchester found that "the average toothbrush can contain 10 million of more bacteria." We should rinse our brushes thoroughly after use, replace in a timely manner or sooner if bristles become frayed, and store them in a upright position in an area that allows proper drying between bushings

We will be at the in the Kid Zone at the Taste of Arlington festival in Ballston on Sunday May 17th. Stop by for food, fun, and to meet Dr. Keaney and her staff!

Recently the US Department of Health and Human Services announced that the optimal recommended amount of fluoride added to drinking water should now be a uniform 0.7 mg/l.  The previous recommendation was set in 1962 as "a range of 0.7-1.2 mg/l."  Water flouridation has been proven to help prevent cavities in both children and adults.

We are officially up and running in Ballston.  Our office is exciting and welcoming for families and kids of all ages.  Please check out our website and call for an appointment.  Virtual tour coming soon!

Coming February 2015 - Dr. Keaney can't wait to start helping Arlington kids on their journey to dental health and wellness
