Another great reason to visit Languedoc (Occitanie) this summer. The Fabre Museum are hosting a Picasso Exhibition from Mid June to September. Montpellier is a fabulous day out, great food, shops and culture. #SouthFranceVillas #montpellier #familyholidays #Picasso

The beautiful town of Pezenas, Languedoc Roussillon, South of France.

Spending a day in Pezenas is a real treat especially on a Saturday. The vibrant Saturday market fills the whole of the centre stretching from one end to the other. Friendly stall holders chat and say ‘Bonjour’ as people walk by. Starting at the top end of the marker I walk past a huge variety of food stalls – there’s a great choice of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit most of which are organic ( bio is the French word) , vegetarian paella, amazing bread stalls and I’m hit by a variety of appetising smells . How can I be hungry??? Its only 10.00 and I had some lovely fresh croissants earlier with my coffee…

Further on I walk by an array of clothing stalls some with the most exquisite linens and a little further on shoes and handbags are displayed in the morning sun. The atmosphere is fantastic and many different languages can be heard as I walk through the market. A couple of purchases later I arrive at the far end where a colourful basket stall is strategically placed on one corner and a toy stall, surrounded by children on the other. Flowers are displayed in the shade alongside various plants, herbs and spices.

The many cafes to the side of the market are overflowing and every chair is occupied by both locals and holiday makers either deep in conversation or simply ‘people watching’, and if you are lucky, you may hear a local playing the Accordion -- a real French experience.
Moving out of the sun down one of the many narrow winding streets I walk past a variety of individual workshops where artisans are selling their wares – belts, jewellery, candles, artwork and there's even a shop where everything is made from cork! …. I pass a shop famous for its delicious Pezenas ‘petit pates’ (savoury pastries) and I amble along past numerous shops (including La Graniote a wonderful health shop selling homemade vegetarian and vegan food along with dairy-free, gluten-free and wheat-free goods), cafes and restaurants before reaching an elegant building set in an attractive square bustling with people where inside, artisans have displayed their works. This square also houses the organic market, even though most of the fresh fruit and vegetables on the main market are organic this particular market guarantees that everything is 100% organic.

After spending the best part of an hour looking round at the most unusual sculptures, beautiful handmade jewellery and art deco furniture I venture out into the mid-day sun. I leave the narrow winding streets passing a variety of ‘tourist’ shops and then find myself on Place du 14 Juillet where there are several larger restaurants and a large car park. I walk along what is the main road into Pezenas past the bus station ( great deals - only 1 euro to Montpellier!) and then find myself on a road where there is an abundance of ‘Brocante’ shops.

Looking to my left I notice a restaurant ‘Ou Est-Tu Ginger?’ (Where are you Ginger?) tucked away down Rue Calquieres Baisses. On approaching the unassuming entrance I notice that this is a French Mediterranean Vegetarian friendly restaurant with an entrance via a large door through to an attractive courtyard with amazing vintage furniture. The restaurant specialises in vegetarian and vegan meals and on the menu today is a variety of handmade dips served with delicate crisps for starters and the main course selection offers a ‘Wok vegetarian’ dish with fresh noodles and roasted vegetables, a vegan burger served with spicy lentils and sauté potatoes. Maybe start with a ‘Ginger cocktail’ (alcohol free) consisting of ginger, lemon, lime and Perrier water, whilst savouring over the menu

This exquisite restaurant owned by a lovely couple Thomas and Magali seats up to 25 people and is open from the beginning of April to the end of October, Tuesday to Saturday evenings from 19h30 and Saturday lunchtime from 12h30. It is proving to be very popular so do book in advance. Although cards are not accepted as payment there are cash points less than a 2 minute walk away.

Continuing my visit to Pezenas I follow the road and visit several of the ‘Brocantes’ which sell a wide variety of second hand goods and antiques. There is really something here for everyone although you would have to be here with a car to transport larger bargains home.
Rather than continuing on to visit other ‘Brocantes’ I turn right into Rue Conti ( Great restaurant with vegan options is Maison Conti) and find myself back in the heart of Pezenas where things are now slowing down. The fruit and vegetable traders are now packing up…..after all they’ve been here since 6am…. I take a well needed break at La Vintage Café where I choose a prime position to people watch and then order my drink…..
Why not come to stay in Pezenas, South of France for a week or two in your own private villa? www.southfrancevillas have some beautiful villas in the area, why not have a BBQ with all the beautiful fresh ingredients bought from the market? Treat yourself to a lovely glass of the local Rosé and then spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool! http://ow.ly/i/yPZyg

Great September offers available in our South of France Villas, take advantage of the cheap flights and train tickets that are on offer. The weather in the South of France is still lovely and warm, the wine growers are out harvesting the grapes and after all the sunshine this year it is set to be a fantastic harvest with excellent quality grapes. #september #southoffrance #villaholiday #wine
