Makes me wonder...if sailing is an example of a hydrofoil at work, what prolonged the invention of flight so many centuries after sailing? Was it the lack of propulsion/windspeed required to generate the lift required for flight? Someone should've put the sail horizontal much earlier!
Wow, must be a trend of this generation. I have the same story coming out of High school... Good marks, competitive squash athlete with scholarships available to Ivy league schools; but I was suffering self doubt and wanted to take a year off, which after hearing this my MD parents almost took my head off. To compromise I moved to Ontario although dragged my feet through engineering at UWO and graduated not knowing an ounce more about what I "wanted" to do than I did after high school. Here's the strangest thing, the stupidest smart thing I ever done did...a year after grad I went off-grid - totally AWOL - for an entire summer, lived out of my car and on my credit card, volunteered on Earthship builds and camped with hippies until I ended up at a music festival (shamhala BC) and fell head over heels, love at first sight with a girl that I moved in with within 2 weeks and now is my fiance. Her whole family are teachers, HS and post secondary, and have jolted me to realize my passion for teaching the very science I rejected when I begrudgingly slopped through engineering. I now work for myself, running my own private tutoring company, teaching HS and university level physics and math...which is what led me to Veritasium. Next goal: to go back to school and get an education degree to teach HS that needed a bachelor's degree anyway - my engineering was vindicated! - even though I never even wanted to do it in the first place! Life has a crazy f$cking way of being ironic. Hell...look how pathetically long this is now, but I'll end with this: the universe tends towards the lowest energy state, and so should you. This is not an excuse for laziness but rather a mantra to "go with the flow" and trust in the quantum probability that is life, aka your "gut" - it's the only "life instrument compass thingy" you have, so maybe as well use it. Finally, should you listen to your parents? Well, it's quantic: you should and you shouldn't...simultaneously.
This principle is used in traffic signaling to detect when your car has arrived at the intersection, conveniently changing the lights for you. There is an electromagnet (current carrying wire) buried underneath the road and when a conductor (ie vehicle) passes perpendicularly over it, it will induce a current into that wire, thereby changing the voltage in the wire that a computer can detect. It also helps slow your car down just a smidge, just like in the video :)
