"The point of this run is to show that you CAN change the rules in pokemon yellow. There is a certain sequence of valid actions (like walking from one place to another or buying items) that will allow you to transform pokemon yellow into Pacman, or Tetris, or Pong, or a MIDI player, or anything else you can imagine."

A week ago, I was reading about veal, and I realized I needed more information about the meat I eat and its ethical and environmental impact. Further research led me to the conclusion that if I care about both, and my only choice is to change my diet, the only logical conclusion is to become vegetarian or vegan. But I struggle to absorb non-heme iron, so I really don't want to give up meat and risk being iron-deficient even more often than I already am.

Then I read about moral offsetting [1] (the second point linked; the first is moot, as beef is awful for the environment). After reflecting on this for a week, I decided to make the following annual donations:

1. $25/year to The Humane League (whose effectiveness is now about 13 animals per dollar) [2]. This comes out to over 300 animals per year. I assume this also has some impact on water consumption and carbon footprint, but I act conservatively and assume it is better to pay too much than to pay too little.

2. $25/year to Columbia Water Center [3]. It was too hard to find information about how much water I can save through donations. In fact, I think that is very much a non-question. I opted instead to fund research. I acknowledge this may not be the most cost-effective, but it is the only use of my money that makes sense to me for this particular offset.

3. 2500 lb of carbon offsets [4] from TerraPass, which comes out to about $15 this particular year [5].

I'm operating under the assumption that my meat consumption kills 200 animals per year, consumes 450,000 gallons of water, and emits 1,600 lb of CO2. I should probably cite sources for those numbers, but they are aggregated from a number of sources based on my own personal balance of chicken and beef consumption, and then padded significantly (I only eat meat once per day, and typically in small portions, but again, I feel like donating too much is better than donating too little).

It looks like the hardest to offset is water consumption; how does one even measure this? Given that it is cheap to offset animal lives, I will likely opt to eat mostly chicken (when I eat meat) from now on.

I am returning to Amazon this summer, but for a very different reason: I will be interning with Byron Cook's formal methods research group for AWS. I'm excited to do some really interesting work and to be a part of an excellent research group in its foundations. The whole New York City thing doesn't hurt, either.
