+Patricio Arrangoiz The unemployment rate of people participating in protests is approximately the same as the national unemployment rate. Don't simply listen to pundits as your sources, do fact checks first.

The day everyone of the twelve million six hundred thousand unemployed persons in the United States marches down Wall Street is the day everyone will agree that the problem does not lie with the unemployed, but with everyone else.

West Coast Port Shutdown 12/12

This is about showing numbers. The media has been downplaying the size of this movement, so it's time to make a peaceful stand to show them just how many of us there are. To show this isn't just a fringe group but everyday americans who are angry watching their government overrun by corruption and tired of being the ones to pay the price. This isn't about demands but saying "We see what you did there and we aren't going to be fooled anymore." In a loud and unified enough voice to be heard.

In the last month this has also become about something else as well. Practicing our rights as Americans, rights we are told we have so long as they are used in an appropriate way or not at all. Our rights of free speech and assembly are slowly being taken away and it's time to exercise them.

Doesn't this just hurt the port workers?
Nope, many port workers are in support of this action, as is the International Longshore and warehouse Union. Protests are nothing new to the ILWU and hopefully this will shed light on their rights as well.

Occupy Toledo Safer Space Policy

A safer space is a welcoming, engaging and supportive environment. It is a space that is critical of the power structures that affect our everyday lives, and where power dynamics, backgrounds, and the effects of our behavior on others are prioritized. It’s a space that strives to respect and understand survivors’ specific needs. Everyone who enters a safer space has a responsibility to uphold the values of the space. We want Occupy Toledo to be a space where people support each other and can feel free to be themselves. We want this to be a space where abuse and discrimination is not tolerated. We hope that everyone at this occupation is made aware of the idea of 'safer spaces' and that you are proactive in helping make this a safer space too.

Everybody is asked to be aware of their language and behavior, and to think about whether it might be offensive to others. This is no space for violence, for touching people without their consent, for being intolerant of someone's religious beliefs or lack thereof, for being creepy, sleazy, racist, ageist, sexist, trans-phobic, able-bodiest, classist, sizeist or any other behavior or language that may perpetuate oppression.

What we need to do to occupy a safer space:
  • Respect people's physical and emotional boundaries
  • Always get explicit verbal consent before touching someone or crossing boundaries
  • Respect people's opinions, beliefs, differing states of being and differing points of view
  • Be responsible for your own action. Be aware that your actions do have an effect on others despite what your intentions may be
  • Take responsibility for your own safety and get help if you need it.
Any group or individual engaging in violence (including sexual violence and harassment) within the occupation will automatically be excluding themselves. We will be asking them to leave immediately.
