The 1896 Oil House
March 17th, 2012

According to its history, this oil house that was used for the +Provincetown Wood End lighthouse was built in 1896 and is the remaining original structure.

I find these little oil houses pretty interesting. The history states that this one was made to house the kerosene used to light the light. For some reason, I would have thought that it started by housing whale oil but I know little about actual lighthouse history other than what I read on-line and we all know how "accurate" that information can be.

If this was did house whale oil for the light, it was pretty ironic that we spotting dozens of whale just off the shore where this one if located.

This oil house has the exact same design as the one that is at Ned's Point Lighthouse.
