Buenas, gente!

Gracias!

Me encanta. Esto es enFATEizar D&D :)
DMing Tip - you can drastically change the way D&D plays at the table by changing skill checks from a binary pass/fail system to a degrees of success / success at a cost system.

Example:

RAW: PC tries to pick a lock and needs a 15 to succeed. If they roll a 14 they fail to pick the lock and the door is still closed. 15 or higher they succeed at picking the lock.

Non Binary: PC tries to pick the lock and needs a 15 to succeed. If they roll less than 15 they could still succeed, but maybe they break their lock picks in the process or make noise that is heard by a nearby guard. The door still gets opened, but there are consequences that move the story forward (commonly called Failing Forward - I call it failing funward :)

If they rolled really well (18 or so) then not only do they pick the lock but notice something about this type of lock that gives them advantage on all future lock picking attempts in this dungeon.

2nd Example:

RAW: PC tries to leap over a wall and they need a 15 to succeed. If they roll less than 15 they fail to clear the wall and are still on this side of it. 15 or higher they make it over.

Success at a cost: PC tries to leap over a wall and needs a 15 to succeed but rolls a 12 . . . DM offers - if you take your shield and Captain America it into the wall you can use it as a spring board to get over the wall, but you won't have your shield any longer.

for myself as a DM, I have found this way of handling skill checks has made the game much more fun to run and play and has sharpened by improv skills by opening up resolutions to more than one of two options - it also allows for limited player narrative control as they can be included in deciding what limited or excessive success looks like or offering their own consequence to pass a check they didn't quite get on the die roll.

Essentially this is taking FATE's success with a costs and/or Dungeon World's resolution system and porting it into D&D.

¡Buenas!
