Verification of Employment History

The verification of employment history can be expanded to include interviews with the applicant’s former managers, peers or supervisors at that company. This is done to try and get a better understanding of the applicant’s skills, training, time management, disciplinary actions, character, work habits and the like.

The interview questions can be tailored to provide more relevant information based on the industry or the individuals specialization.

Important Note:
The prior employer may have a policy disallowing the release of some information, such as salary or eligibility for rehire. Others may have a policy that allows them to confirm information but not correct any erroneous information provided. Still others will require a signed release before they will reply, which is not a problem unless they go so far as to require an original signature (wet signature) or require a special release form of their own, which adds delays to the process. The good news is that these demanding former employers are rare. Inasmuch as your employee screening company is at the mercy of the former employer’s human resources department, timely responses cannot be guaranteed and multiple calls or faxes maybe required. Ultimately, some employers may never respond and there is nothing that can be done.

Education History Verification

Like the prior employment verification, Education history verification of an applicants education history is a relatively simply task in most cases. This Education history verification can be performed with high schools for GED or graduation, post secondary institution, trade schools and private education companies.

The vast majority of the time an employment history verification can be done by telephone, fax or via the internet. Every institution requires a signed release for verification.

Following the lead of corporate America, many educational institutions have begun outsourcing their enrollment and graduation verification services to third parties who charge fees for access to the information in amounts typically ranging from $5 to $25 per search.

Education history verification
Some situations exist that can slow down the process and make it cost ineffective to verify education information. These include the fact that most secondary schools in America do not track student records by social security number, making the search for common names a complicated one. It is also important to make sure that the applicant supplies their name at the time of attendance and their date of graduation. Lastly, schools do close and consolidate; making the location of old records a challenge to find. This is particularly true with private schools or situations involving older applicants.

GED verifications are often handled differently and can require a written request sent via US Mail to be completed and some states add a fee for these verifications.

Schools can also have one unique situation that limits access to records known as summer vacation. During the summer months, some schools close the entire administrative office or limit the staff levels to the point that verification is delayed extensively or not possible until the fall.

The minimum information required for Education history verification of education includes the following:

• Name of institution and address of location attended
• Dates of attendance
• Degree obtained and type
• For a GED, name of testing center

Dan Klimek is the Director of Operations for BGCC. Dan is an accomplished investigator specializing in locating difficult to obtain information. Dan holds a Masters in Intelligence Analysis degree from the University of Detroit. Search availabilities: Statewide

There are approximately twenty states that offer a genuine statewide criminal history search by name, date of birth and or social security number. Various additional states offer fingerprinting searches and even more offer no such search options to private companies. It is important to note that of these twenty states, only about fourteen of them offer statewide criminal search options that are feasible for pre-employment screening. When we talk about feasibility in pre-employment screening, we mean that the time it takes to get the results must be reasonable and certainly fall inside of our target two to four business day turn around time.

The steps we take to assure that your statewide criminal history search is conducted accurately and timely:

• Once we receive your applicant’s personal information via out FCRA guided authorization and disclosure forms, we verify the accuracy of this information against our databases.

• After this information is verified, we request that a criminal history search be conducted on your applicant.

• This request is usually submitted within the hour that you request the search and is done directly with a state source; most of these state sources are State Police records departments or central record archives.These searches typically take twenty-four to seventy-two hours to be returned to us from the official state entity.

• Once we receive these results, we combine them with any additional searches you requested and produce a detailed report outlining our findings.

• This report is revised for accuracy and is sent to you the client immediately.

These searches claim total coverage, but are usually just a search with a privately maintained database or the Department of Corrections of that particular state. The Department of Corrections holds information pertaining to convicted felons that have served or are currently serving time in a state run correctional institution. These searches do not include misdemeanor convictions or felony convictions that did not result in a prison sentence. Furthermore, some if not most states do not keep their department of corrections data for more than three years after a person is released.

Alternatives
As an alternative to statewide criminal history searches, we offer county level criminal court records searches, which usually include more in-depth information on convictions, but are limited to the county we conduct the search in. It is recommended that we locate all the counties an applicant has resided in within the past seven years to assure that the proper counties are searched.

Let’s face it, we can’t be with our children 24/7 no matter how hard we try. Hiring a caregiver for the children, or other family member in need of assistance, can be one of the most stressful and anxious times of your life. You can’t leave them with just anyone, and whether you’re a good judge of character or not, having the right background check performed isn’t a luxury for the rich, it’s just another necessary step in the process. Likewise, if they’ve lived in other counties or states, we would suggest doing the same to give you a complete picture. Consider if they’ve lived in more than one state, a second or multiple driving record may be necessary as well.

References need to be verified. If they’ve given the name of a previous employer, who turns out to be a married sister with a different surname, you should know that. Doesn’t mean they’d be a bad caregiver, but why not just tell you that upfront instead of “bending the truth”?

It is also not unusual for us to check out their social media pages. You can learn a lot about a person and how they really behave. They may shoot up to the top of your candidate list or sink like the Titanic, but either way, it’s better to find out now, before an offer has been made.

Set boundaries beforehand. Who else is allowed in your home when they’re present? Or if you plan on taking your loved one to them, who else is going to be there? If their husband or wife, child, or others, will be there while your loved one is in their care, whether helping them out or not, suggest a background check be done on them as well. If they won’t allow it, time to look for a new candidate.
