I have been working on creating new pieces for my portfolio inspired by some of my favourite children's tales. This was an illustration I produced for Francis Hodgson Burnett's story The Secret Garden, where Mary Lennox discovers an enchanting garden, hidden for a decade within the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor. Pale, disagreeable, selfish and the product of a cold upbringing in the heat of India, the newly-orphaned Mary finds herself in the very foreign landscape of the Yorkshire Moors. Fuelled by warming porridge and a curiosity to spite her otherwise stiff personality, Mary follows the chirps and flutters of her first friend in the whole world - a tiny robin - into the previously locked garden. A new world of discovery awaits...
