Blackberry Smoke is often billed as a country band, but its musical stylings push toward rock. Frontman Charlie Starr — and his massive mutton chops — commands attention through his vocals and guitar riffs. The band released a live album recorded in North Carolina last year, and its fourth studio effort, Holding All the Roses, hit stores in February as the band garners new fans at every tour stop and continues climbing the charts. The familiar saying “leave it all on the stage” rings true for the thousands of fans who have seen Lyndsey Highlander in concert across the country. Lyndsey arrived in Nashville from the antebellum town of Providence Forge, VA, near the Chickahominy River. From an early age, Lyndsey was known for her precocious musical talents; it was just a matter of time before she would share her gifts with the world. An inspired writer and top-notch performer, Lyndsey is just now hitting her musical stride. Currently touring the country opening for Phil Vassar and Travis Tritt, Lyndsey is introducing audiences everywhere to her her fresh and powerful sound. Among headlining shows of her own, Lyndsey has landed opening slots and shared festival stages with artists such as Brantley Gilbert, Blackberry Smoke, Gretchen Wilson and Steel Magnolia to name a few.

Steve Earle has a gift for articulating the plight of the downtrodden and misunderstood. A knack for stepping inside his fellow man’s boots and feeling the wear on the sole, the caked dirt between the treads, and the permanent awkwardness of the fit. This insight kept listeners riveted throughout 2013’s The Low Highway, as Earle reported back on the lot of small-town lifers, neglected war veterans, and the invisible homeless with both sympathy and a burning curiosity. By his own admission, the songwriter turns more inward on Terraplane. For Earle, that means the blues, music he credits as “the commonest of human experience, perhaps the only thing that we all truly share.” If Earle’s correct, the blues aren’t merely a condition but rather the human condition.

If anyone ever needed proof that music is an international language, then they need to look no further than Don Williams. Don picks his songs with all the skills of a class winemaker picking grapes – only the best will do, and the vintage results, as fans around the world all know, is just about the best blend of emotions the heart could ask for.

Three supremely gifted singer-songwriters share the stage, singing with and supporting each other in music that seeks the heart’s core. Grammy winner Patty Griffin “digs deep into introspective lyrics…[using] the silence between notes to create shimmering music you won’t soon forget” (American Songwriter); Nickel Creek co-founder Sara Watkins creates “a sound that’s gritty and determined to avoid clichés” (BBC Music); and Anaïs Mitchell is “writing material that stands comparison with the great singer-songwriters,” including Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (Daily Telegraph).

Beloved singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash makes her Center for the Performing Arts premiere with her band in a concert featuring music from her acclaimed 2014 album The River & The Thread. The recording includes eleven original songs written by Cash and her longtime collaborator—and husband—John Leventhal, who also served as producer, arranger, and guitarist. The River & The Thread evokes the American South’s rich landscape—physical, musical, and emotional—and examines the indelible impressions it’s made on our collective culture and on Cash, who was born in Memphis, Tennessee. The songs portray a multigenerational cast of characters—from a Civil War soldier off to fight in Virginia, to a New Deal-era farmer in Arkansas, to a present-day couple in Alabama. While Cash and Leventhal were inspired by the many musical styles associated with the South—Delta blues, gospel, Appalachian folk, country, rock, and others—the resulting collection of songs is contemporary. Cash’s crystalline voice and Leventhal’s compelling guitar are the heart of the project, but they weave in additional instrumentation to suit the tone of each song. During the concert, beautifully poetic, topical, and interpretive photographs project above the performers and invite a timeless sense of connection to the songs and their extended stories. The Grammy-winning Cash, who has recorded fifteen albums, has charted twenty-one top forty country singles, eleven of which reached number one. A Chicago Tribune reviewer describes Composed, her 2010 memoir, as “one of the best accounts of an American life you will likely ever read.”

In their 13 years of performing and touring, from small clubs in their native Southeast to big arenas around the world, the Avett Brothers have spent lots of time thinking about variety, dynamics and song placement. Early on, they just wanted to create the right mood and arc for frenetic shows full of ringing acoustic guitars and banjos, chirpy vocal harmonies, lots of hooting, hollering, hand-clapping and foot-stomping.
For the Avett Brothers, reality consists of close friends and family, and in keeping with the theme of ephemerality, one moment on Magpie documents something that truly is gone forever. It comes at the end of “Morning Song,” after Scott Avett sings the line, “Even though I know there’s hope in every morning song, you have to find that melody alone.” The line is followed by a chorus of voices, repeating, “You have to find that melody alone.”

On the bootheels of his acclaimed The Calm After … album, country music superstar Travis Tritt comes to The Mahaffey for an intimate, solo acoustic concert.

Travis was an integral part of the electrified honky tonk resurgence of the early 1990s, and his gritty, straight-from-the-hip approach landed five No. 1 hits in quick succession – “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore,” “Can I Trust You With My Heart,” “Foolish Pride” and “Best of Intentions.” His multi-platinum albums include Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof, Country Club and Down the Road I Go. His landmark 1991 release It’s All About to Change was certified three times platinum.
