The Dan Art of the People of Liberia

Masks are the most important art form of the Dan people of Liberia, also called Gio or Yakuba. Dan sculptors mainly produce masks which deal with virtually every element in Dan society, including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation, and of course, entertainment. They also produce stylized wooden spoons and intricate game boards used for mancala, a common game of "count and capture."

DOGON BRONZE SUN SIRIUS PENDANT - MALI
This type of circular pendant, representing the sun symbol refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. Despite their small size, the pendant express status, prestige and power among the Dogon tribe. It seems to be foreign and is relatively rare in western collections.
