This trial has been going on for about a month, but it largely comes down to one question: What do jurors see in a black and white surveillance video? http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-kelly-thomas-20140111,0,1008152.story?page=1#axzz2q6SrAlUd
At the heart of the Kelly Thomas murder case is a video that records the violent encounter. Jurors must decide what it shows.

One year ago, protests in Anaheim over the police shootings of two Latinos got national attention. What's happened since? This story is my attempt at an answer:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-anaheim-unrest-20130729,0,5583244.story
It began with violence: Anaheim police firing beanbags and a police dog breaking loose and lunging into a crowd of men, women and children, some of whom had confronted the officers over their fatal shooting of a Latino man.

"If you can get a fine for turning in a library book late, you should get fined for cutting off access to the beach or filling in a wetland," said Bruce Reznik, executive director of the Planning and Conservation League, one of dozens of environmental groups that support the legislation. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-adv-coastal-commision-fines-20130819,0,918766.story
