It is important for children to eat and grow healthily, so that they can attain their fullest potential. Hence, this is the aim of the Gastroenterology Clinic (Paediatric Liver, Digestion & Nutrition) as it deals with diseases of the liver and gut.

Some of the conditions/diseases include:

Gastrointestinal conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, recurrent abdominal pain, chronic constipation, cow’s milk protein allergy, inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease should be recognized, diagnosed and treated early to minimise school disruption and psychological impact.

Chronic liver disease is the commonest cause of liver transplantation in children around the world. Early management may prevent liver damage, cirrhosis and the need for early transplantation.

Good nutrition is essential for growth and brain development. For some fussy eaters, childen with chronic illness, oral hypersensitivity or swallowing disorders, eating is a difficult task that needs to be monitored to ensure that adequate nutrients are delivered in the best possible way so as not to result in a failure to thrive. Other children with surgical short gut may need special intravenous nutrition.

Childhood allergies, immune dysregulation and childhood rheumatological diseases are some of the common disorders children suffer from. Defects of the immune system are also responsible for primary immunodeficiencies and recurrent infections.

Childhood allergic disorders include atopic dermatitis, food allergies, allergic rhinitis and atopic asthma. Adverse reactions after drugs and vaccines can sometimes cause allergic reactions as well.

Common symptoms include recurrent itchy rashes, urticaria (hive-like rashes), angiodema, recurrent sneezing and rhinitis, wheezing and chronic cough.

Our immune system is one of the main defence mechanism of the body. It protects us from harmful, infectious agents. Immunological disorders include primary immunodeficiencies whereby there is an inborn defect of immunity resulting in recurrent fevers and infections. Most children who have recurrent fevers don’t have an immune defect but rather exposure to multiple new infections in childcare centres or schools. Immune boosting strategies can be discussed.

Rheumatological disorders include Kawasaki disease, Henoch Scholein purpura, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Other immune dysregulation disorders include chronic idiopathic urticaria or immune mediated thrombocytopenia or anemia.

What is Phonological Awareness?
Phonological Awareness is the general ability to attend to the sound properties of a spoken word, rather than attend to its meaning. This ability is a foundation for writing and reading. Children learn to recognize sounds in words and use this knowledge to build on their phonics skills – associating letters to sounds in words.

Join our Pre-Literacy Group to improve your child’s Phonological Awareness skills. Conducted by our Speech-Language Therapist in a small group size, children are explicitly taught in a series of fun steps to encourage attentive listening and to be able to manipulate sounds in words they hear.
