How to lay roof shingles?
Roof shingles are used to protect the building from natural factors such as rain, heat, snow etc. There are various types of shingles in use today and the most common of them are made of asphalt, metal, wood, slate and metal. Depending on the location of the house, type of building, budget and certain other factors, the type of shingle is selected. Before buying a shingle and installing them at home, you need to consult an expert on what type of shingle to buy. As the purchase and installation of shingles may cost higher, it is necessary to get adequate information about the type. The installation of shingle is one of the difficult tasks performed on a roof top. Proper security measures should be taken before going on top. I will take you through a list of steps to be performed before laying shingles, at the time of laying them and after laying shingles. There are certain restrictions on what type of shingle should be used in certain areas. Also, the number of shingles to be used is also specified. Make sure that, you go with the local information. You need to identify the number of shingles needed to cover the roof. Usually the shingles come in bundles. For your easy calculation on the number of bundles needed, you first need to measure the length and shortest sides of the roof section and find the area. Add all the areas and divide the sum by hundred to obtain the count of squares. This value should then be multiplied by 3 to get the number of bundles.
Ensure personal safety as the roofs are higher in altitude in most of the houses. Moreover, they are steep and hence use some scaffolding system such as jacks and hooks for preventing you from falling off. You then need to measure the length of the shingle as it should go on par with the roof. Most of the asphalt shingle is 3 feet in length and in such cases; the width of the roof should be in multiples of 3. Otherwise, some piece of shingle will be left in every row. Before installing roof shingles, remove any old piece of material that is left there. In some cases, one layer of shingle can be mounted over another but in some parts of the country, this is not in practice. Hence check with the local authorities before doing such roofing. The asphalt shingles can be mounted in two different ways, one, along the length of the roof so that all the shingles come in a straight line and the second, leaving the final row empty for the shingle from another column. Line all the shingles either horizontally or vertically so that the next row can be mounted. As mentioned previously, there would be some part of the shingle left over in the last column. Hence, it should be cut over.
Usually, there are plastic strips on the backside of the each shingle and this should be removed during installation. Only then, the shingle will be cemented to the roof and be safe from winds. The shingles should be nailed properly. If the nailing of the shingles is not proper, the entire roofing may collapse leading to damage of shingles and hence exercise caution while nailing them. Follow the same steps to lay the subsequent rows of shingles. If there is any ventilation system, chimneys on the top of the roofs, shingle the roofs surrounding them. The alternating arrangement of shingles will have problems with the color of the shingles as some bundles come in different colors. The problem can be avoided if the bundles have same lot number or if the arrangement follows the stair step model. Follow the above mentioned steps to install the shingles yourselves.
