Time To Use Your 2017 Dental Insurance Benefits!

The end of the year will be here before we know it. Unfortunately, dental insurance benefits do expire each year on December 31st.

You can save time and money if you take care of your cavity, broken filling or cleaning early. We can help to prevent more costly treatment down the road, if we take care of your dental needs early. Please call The McHenry Dentist at (815) 363-0103 so we can help you maximize your remaining dental benefits before the end of the year. If you do not have any pending treatment, this is a great time to upgrade your smile and invest in cosmetic procedures before the holidays.

Celebrate Better Breakfast Month
September is Better Breakfast Month. Celebrate by eating a healthy breakfast low in sugar.

Here are some ideas for a fast and healthy breakfast that the team at The McHenry Dentist adapted from options presented by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in an article entitled "Tips for Better Breakfasts"

1. Add fresh fruit, whole-grain cereal or low sugar granola to low-fat yogurt. Serve it with some orange juice.
2. Make a fresh fruit smoothie. Just mix frozen strawberries, a banana, low-fat or fat free milk with ice and blend for a 30-second smoothie.
3. Add fresh fruit or dried cranberries and almonds to quick-cooking or microwave oatmeal.
4. Prepare a fresh veggie omelet or frattata.
5.Pack a breakfast to go with a banana or an apple and trail mix you make yourself. Mix whole grain cereal or granola, almonds or Pistachios and your favorite mix of dried fruits like raisins, cherries, apricots, pineapple or mango). Store your trail mix to single serving sandwich bags.

Adding more fruit and vegetables to your breakfast is a great way to incorporate low sugar alternatives to your diet.

Most people know that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but most of us still aren’t getting enough. September is Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month. The staff at The McHenry Dentist in Johnsburg encourages everyone in the family to eat a healthy diet complete with plenty of vegetables and fruits.

Eating fruits and vegetables have many benefits:
* Lowers your risk for heart disease and some types of cancer
* Maintains or helps you reach a healthy weight
* Keeps your body strong and active
* It is a healthy alternative to snacks with sugar. Snacks with sugar and drinks with added sugars lead to tooth decay (cavities) too!

Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day:
* Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they’re ready for healthy for after school snacks.
* Make and serve fresh fruit smoothies.
* Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.

Fun video to help your child brush their teeth

The dentists and staff at The McHenry Dentist in Johnsburg IL and the American Dental Association recommend that children brush twice a day for two minutes. Here is a fun video that your kids can watch while they brush their teeth. Every 30 seconds, the animated tooth brush changes position signaling to your child that it is time to switch to a new area of the mouth.
