A few fun facts about tomatoes:
• Originated in the South American Andes. They were cherry sized and grew wild.
• Was once considered an aphrodisiac, and in fact the name tomato in Italian is poma amoris or "love apple".
• Was once considered poisonous, by Americans. In 1820 Robert Gibbon Johnson stood on the steps of a New Jersey courthouse and ate a tomato, proving they were harmless.
• Actually a fruit, but in 1893, the US Supreme Court ruled that tomatoes are vegetables for culinary purposes.
• Each American consumes about 80 pounds of tomatoes a year.
• California produces nearly half of the world's tomatoes, making it the largest grower of tomatoes in the world.
• Tomatoes produce lycopene, which is known to fight cancer.
