The Summer Triangle, Milky Way over the Great Wall of China
The Summer Triangle over the Great Wall

Explanation: Have you ever seen the Summer Triangle? The bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair form a large triangle on the sky that can be seen rising in the northern spring during the morning, and rising in the northern fall during the evening. During summer months, the triangle can be found nearly overhead near midnight as three of the brightest stars on the sky. Featured here, along with the arch of the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, the Summer Triangleasterism was captured this spring over the Great Wall of China. This part of the Great Wall, a World Culture Heritage Site, was built during the 6th century on the Yan Mountains. At the summit is Wangjinglou Tower from which, on a clear night, the lights of Beijing are visible in the distance.

Magnificent view of Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) in Guatemala erupting under the stars.

Photographer: Diego Rizzo
Volcano of Fire Erupts Under the Stars

First, there was an unusual smell. Then there was a loud bang. But what appeared to the eye was the most amazing of all. While waiting near midnight to see a possible eruption of Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) in Guatemala last month, a ready camera captured this extraordinary image. Lava is seen running down the side of the volcano, while ash rises up, and glowing magma bubbles explode out of the caldera. Lights near the town of Escuintla can be seen in the background, one of several nearby towns that have witnessed severalspectacular eruptions previously. High above, seemingly tranquil by comparison, are familiar stars from the night sky. Although the Volcán de Fuego usually undergoes low-level activity, when the next spectacular eruption will occur is unknown.

Stunning night sky in Tekapo, New Zealand

Captured by Trey Ratcliff
I woke up with a dead rabbit beside me.

I know this isn't the sort of thing one wants to hear when looking at this timeless and Hawking-esque beauty, but it is the strange truth.

I arrived at sunset at this remote and beautiful church in the middle of the south island of New Zealand. There were quite a few people milling about, taking countless mobile-phone photos of themselves holding the church in their little fingers or using selfie-sticks. I think they are just perhaps making a visual diary, or trying to create a story of themselves, which is fine and okay.

My plan was to stay late and sleep outside. I had my sleeping bag and my friend Stu was there (who had his own sleeping bag, I should add). We set up our bags by the church, had a few glasses of wine, put on some music, and talked about nonsensical things and laughed into the night. Around 3 AM, my alarm went off, so I slipped out of my bag to capture this scene. The next morning the supine rabbit appeared between Stu and me. We were bewildered and laughing.
