Erin Kiernan, Jackie Schmillen and Mystery Celebrity Star in This Year's Best Bagger Celebrity Competition
Friday, August 10, 1 p.m. at the Iowa State Fair on the Budweiser Stage

Local TV news personality Erin Kiernan is back this summer to defend her title as Celebrity Bagger. Kiernan, a news anchor for WHO Channel 13 News, won last year's celebrity competition and $250 for the charity of her choice. A travel trophy and bragging rights go along with the title. Her KCCI Channel 8 competitor Jackie Schmillen, the "Beat the Traffic" reporter, is back for a second chance at giving the trophy a new home at KCCI. Kiernan, Schmillen, last year's Best Bagger winner Jacob Laursen and Iowa State Fair Queen Paris Schnepf will go head to head for the Celebrity Best bagger title and a $500 donation to a charity of the winner's choosing.
Eighteen contestants will face off in three preliminary heats followed by a championship round at 1 p.m. on the Budweiser Stage, located immediately south of the main concourse entrance and west o f the Varied Industries building.

All contestants will bag identical grocery orders consisting of no more than 40 commonly purchased items. Contestants will be evaluated on speed, technique, style and attitude.

The four baggers who score the most in the preliminary heat will then face off in the championship to earn cash prizes. The final round will feature two scored heats to determine the overall champion. First place receives $500 cash, second place earns $250 while third and fourth place winners receive $150 and $100 respectively. The overall champion also wins a trip for two to the 2013 National Best Bagger Contest, which is held in Las Vegas at the National Grocers Association Convention in February. The winner of the national competition receives a grand prize of $10,000, the second place winner is awarded $5,000, while the third, fourth and fifth place finishers earn $1,000 each.

While the judges are tallying the overall scores of the championship round, the crowd can enjoy the Celebrity Best Bagger Competition. Evaluated strictly on speed and who can have the most fun, the winner earns a traveling trophy and bragging rights for one year.

Please join us this Friday at the Iowa State Fair and cheer on your favorite bagger.
