His Majesty The King with the people living in Thanza and Tenchoe, in 2008 (above) and now (below). Thanza is the largest settlement in Lunana, and located close to Tenchoe. These are also the settlements closest to the glaciers and lakes of Thorthomi, Rapstreng and Lugge.

His Majesty inspects one of the GLOF early warning systems, with Sangay Tenzin, an engineer at the newly established National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology, next to the Rapstreng Tsho. When the lake water rises to certain predetermined levels, these systems trigger alarms, prompting sirens to be sounded at real time at 14 heavily populated places along the river all the way down to Sunkosh. In 1994, when Lugge Tsho burst, it took 7 hours for the flood water to reach Punakha.

His Majesty The King met 12 year old Namgay Kiba and her grandmother, Kinley, in 2008, while visiting Tashoe village, near Lhedi. Namgay Kiba is now 20, and recently married.
“His Majesty recognized me instantly, and wanted to know how I and my family were doing. I feel blessed to have met His Majesty twice already, even though I live in such a far off place,” she said.
