PSA. 50 percent of child drownings occur within 25 yards of a parent or other adult. In 10 percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening.

- I clearly remember two instances in which I saw this happening and alerted a nearby but oblivious parent. Once was in a lake where the child had walked out just a bit too far and couldn't recover. Inches from safety. The other was in a pool where the small child had let go of the edge and was struggling within 2 feet of his chatting parents.
Also, people forget a toddler can't stand up without using his hands, which puts his head under water .Jun 5, 2013
