I stumbled upon an interesting OpenGL slow down issue on stackoverflow.com: Curious slowdown in opengl when using instanced rendering. The author created a program which would render 20 x 20 x 20 cubes in two different ways: indexed drawing and instanced drawing. When using indexed drawing performance seemed fine. But after switching to instanced drawing it broke down.
